Sunderbans are the world's largest mangrove ecosystem as well as a tiger reserve forest spread across India and Bangladesh. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Sunderbans comprises of 104 islands out of which 2 are reportedly already submerged and 4 are under threat due to rising sea levels. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, where a UN network of 2,000 scientists and delegates from more than 120 nations have held closed-door meetings on how best to cope with global warming, are due to publish their next report on Friday (May 4). \u003cbr/\u003eOne of nature's wonders that is feeling the heat of climate change is Sunderbans , a unique mangrove ecosystem spread across India and Bangladesh .\u003cbr/\u003eIt is the largest inter tidal delta of the world, a  World Natural Heritage Site harbouring a great array of life forms now threatened with destruction.\u003cbr/\u003eMore than 4 million people living in Sunderbans and the nearby islands in the delta have been constantly battling with nature - facing the problems of erosion and subsequent land loss over the past few decades.\u003cbr/\u003eSunderbans is also home to the largest wild population of the iconic Bengal tigers and numerous bird and marine species.\u003cbr/\u003eSpread over 10,000 sq km, the Sunderbans lie within the delta of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers in the Bay of Bengal. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile policy makers engage in discussions over the politics of global warming, the people of Sunderbans are witnessing the impact of this unfolding crisis on their lives and livelihoods. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Sunderbans consist of 102 low-lying islands, 54 of which are populated. \u003cbr/\u003eThe signs are all there - rising sea levels, drastic change in weather conditions and monsoon pattern, inundation of coastal areas along with frequent cyclones and rainstorms. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile local scientists are still wary of directly linking these signs  with global warming, they admit that the islands are fast becoming a showcase of the adverse impacts of climate change. \u003cbr/\u003eIn last few years the region has seen significant rise in sea level - more than 2.5 cm (1 inch) each year.\u003cbr/\u003eThe region was singled out as one at serious risk in a recent report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, an authoritative body of 2,500 scientists. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd the scientists are forecasting that problems in Sunderbans will be made much worse by more severe storm surges, droughts and floods.\u003cbr/\u003eThe islands are already home to a rising number of climate refugees - rendered homeless and landless due to rising sea levels and changing climatic cycles. \u003cbr/\u003eAs environment refugees elsewhere in the world, the people of Sunderbans have not caused the problem - but they are suffering the most from it.\u003cbr/\u003eGhoramara Island has lost 75% of its land area in last 30 years due to heavy erosion and slow rate of accretion.\u003cbr/\u003ePresently Ghoramara is inhabited by around 4500 individuals.\u003cbr/\u003eAgriculture, aquaculture and fishery are the economic backbones of this region and have direct linkages with adverse climatic changes.  \u003cbr/\u003eMany people of this island have shifted elsewhere for survival and earning their livelihoods. \u003cbr/\u003eAmong them is Manorama , whose life and livelihood fell prey to the gushing flood waters that inundated almost all of her coastal farmland and home. \u003cbr/\u003eHer family used to own more than 8 acres of farm land - they are now left with less than 1 acre and a small paddy (rice) crop barely enough to feed her family through the year.\u003cbr/\u003eEvery monsoon they spend sleepless nights in fear of losing their shelter and agricultural land yet again. \u003cbr/\u003eScientists say two islands have already vanished from the map of this active delta.\u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Sugata Hazra of Jadavpur University discovered their disappearance when he studied satellite images of the islands over a period of time. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says 6,000 people have had to be relocated because their land is underwater and the rising sea level will lead to massive environmental migration .\u003cbr/\u003eRapid population growth in the islands is adding to the problem.\u003cbr/\u003eAt Bali island close to Bangladesh , Parul Biswas spends her day fishing for prawn seeds.\u003cbr/\u003eAround 65% people of Bali are engaged in farming and 7% are earning  their livelihood by catching prawns seeds from creeks and river water.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter losing her farmland to water, her husband and children have had to find work elsewhere to make ends meet.\u003cbr/\u003eParul Biswas has not heard of climate change - but wonders why the fish yield has declined and tidal fluctuations have risen. \u003cbr/\u003eHabitat degradation at Sunderbans is also threatening its other flagship species like the horseshoe crabs , river dolphins and sea turtles.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists say over exploitation of marine seedlings, contamination of water with toxic urban wastes and rising temperatures are causing changes in breeding cycles of many marine species.\u003cbr/\u003eSagar Island is the largest island in this delta which also shelters large number of displaced people from the adjoining islands. \u003cbr/\u003eThis island itself lost nearly 59 sq. km area in last 7-8 decades. \u003cbr/\u003eBut it houses what has come to be known as the climate refugee village.\u003cbr/\u003eSachin Dandapate has been living in this hut for 5 years now. \u003cbr/\u003eHe fled his home in Ghoramara island when his entire farmland was submerged in water.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe scars of leaving his home and fertile land behind are still fresh - and living like a refugee does not come easy.\u003cbr/\u003eThe sea facing islands are the most vulnerable to losing landmass.\u003cbr/\u003e With a majority of people depending on agriculture, the implications are profound.\u003cbr/\u003eLocal communities are trying to adjust the timing of cropping, changing crop types, and increasing rainwater harvesting and building island mud barrages. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the embankments around the inhabited islands are no more resistant to erratic tidal waves , specially during peak monsoon season. \u003cbr/\u003eBreach of embankment inundates large areas bringing severe damage of crop fields and economic loss for farmers.  \u003cbr/\u003eScientists say immediate financial and logistical support is needed to strengthen the adaptation capability of the people of Sunderbans, specially the coastal populations which are more vulnerable to sea level rise. \u003cbr/\u003eThe impact of human interference and climate change on the Sunderbans natural system is yet to be understood fully.\u003cbr/\u003eBut experts agree that unchecked climate change could be an environmental and economic
