trench has been built to cut off a series of tunnels dug by Palestinian militants and used to smuggle arms, men and alcohol from Egypt into the Gaza Strip. \u003cbr/\u003eThe trench is planned for a depth of 10 metres (33 feet) in some places, along several kilometres (miles) of the border where the town of Rafah and a Palestinian refugee camp come close to the Egyptian border. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Israeli action has provoked fierce fighting with the Palestinians, who have struggled to protect their smuggling routes beneath the Negev desert in recent days. \u003cbr/\u003eThe tunnels, between fifty and a hundred yards long, are dug up to 33 feet underground in compacted earth that is stable and easy to scrape through with a trowel. \u003cbr/\u003eOn the Gaza side, the tunnels rise inside
