Various of protesters AUDIO: explosion\u003cbr/\u003eBolivian miners who marched into La Paz hurling dynamite to protest against President Evo Morales' proposed mining tax hike headed home Wednesday night with a promise of 10 (m) million US dollars in government investment for their independent mining cooperatives. \u003cbr/\u003eIn a show of force by a sector known as Bolivia's most fearless street protesters, more than 20-thousand hard-hatted miners filled the streets of the Andean capital on Tuesday to decry a tax increase central to Morales' plans for \"nationalising\" the country's mining industry. \u003cbr/\u003eGovernment officials said two police officers were injured and four others were temporarily held hostage as miners protested against government plans to increase mining taxes. \u003cbr/\u003eBefore Tuesday's march even began, officials announced they would freeze the cooperatives' taxes at current levels, and instead direct the tax hike at larger private mining companies operating in Bolivia. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the concession did not deter the miners, who blocked traffic in the city centre until their leaders were granted an audience with Morales himself Wednesday afternoon. \u003cbr/\u003eThe government also granted the private miners' cooperatives two of six seats on the governing board of state mining company Comibol. \u003cbr/\u003eAt Wednesday's meeting, Morales threw in the new government investment in the cooperatives and the promise to expand where the groups can mine.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We want to strengthen and protect all the working sectors because this government is part of a social movement. As my colleague was saying, we are a part of this changing process and we will continue to be,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe negotiations revealed the delicate relationship between Morales and Bolivia's estimated 60-thousand independent miners, who backed his 2005 election but have since crossed swords with his administration over access to the country's increasingly valuable mineral deposits.\u003cbr/\u003eLast October, miners' cooperatives seized a state-operated mine at Huanuni, sparking a two-day dynamite battle with state-employed miners over the right to work the mine's rich veins of tin. \u003cbr/\u003eThe clashes left 16 miners dead and more than 60 injured.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I feel like we have reconciled with a very important sector of the country after the events that took place in Huanuni, where hundreds of people were hurt,\" said Morales.\u003cbr/\u003eRising international metal prices, fed in part by spiralling demand from China, have doubled the value of Bolivia's mineral exports, from 547 (m) million US dollars in 2005 to over 1 (b) billion US dollars last year, with cooperatives accounting for just over a third. \u003cbr/\u003eThis year the Bolivian government aims to dramatically increase its tax collections to as much as 300 (m) million US dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eThe proposed tax increase is a first step toward Morales' announced goal of \"nationalising\" Bolivia's mining sector.\u003cbr/\u003eBolivia's extensive mineral deposits are already owned by the state, which operates a handful of mines through Comibol.\u003cbr/\u003eThe rest
