Pervez Musharraf to remain in police custody and return to court in about one week.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the accused, Wasim Akhtar, was an inspector in the paramilitary Rangers that had been assigned to protect Musharraf on April 26 when the alleged assassination was to take place.\u003cbr/\u003eThe explosive-laden vehicle failed to detonate.\u003cbr/\u003eAkhtar's alleged role in the failed April 26 attempt to blow up Musharraf was to let his accomplices know when the presidential entourage would pass the prearranged spot where the vehicle was parked.\u003cbr/\u003eThe pickup truck was parked outside a plaza about one kilometre (a sixth of a mile) from the Karachi International Airport and was camouflaged with the writing \"lifesaving drugs\" emblazoned on its side.\u003cbr/\u003eJustice Shabir Ahmed ordered Akhtar and his co-accused, Mohammed Imran and Mohammed Hanif, to return to court on July 20.\u003cbr/\u003eNo plea was entered.\u003cbr/\u003ePolicemen in bullet proof jackets, armed with machine guns and backed up by jeeps mounted with machine guns, guarded the anti-terrorist court in the heart of Karachi.\u003cbr/\u003eThe accused arrived in armored personnel carriers and Akhtar's face was hidden behind a shawl. \u003cbr/\u003eThe faces of his accomplices were exposed.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's routine in Pakistan to hide the identity of accused. \u003cbr/\u003eThe other two, Hanif and Imran, appeared earlier this week on charges they staged the powerful explosion outside the U.S. Consulate in Karachi on June 14. \u003cbr/\u003eThe bombing killed at least 12 Pakistanis and injured 50 other people.\u003cbr/\u003ePolice in Karachi say Hanif, Ahmed and Sheikh Mohammed Ahmed, also charged in the bombing, were members of Harakat-ul Mujahedeen Al Almi, a splinter group of the outlawed Harakat-ul Mujahedeen. \u003cbr/\u003eIts members have fought in Afghanistan and are allied to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida network.\u003cbr/\u003eAkhtar had been assigned to provide security to Musharraf who was in Karachi on April 26 to campaign for the referendum to extend his term as Pakistan's president.\u003cbr/\u003eAkhtar allegedly telephoned his accomplices when Musharraf's entourage left the airport. \u003cbr/\u003eThe detonator failed and Musharraf's motorcade passed without incident.\u003cbr/\u003eThe vehicle was retrieved and police said it was used nearly two months later in the deadly bombing outside the U.S. Consulate in Karachi.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother 15 people are on the police's most-wanted list in connection with the consulate bombing as well as the May 8 suicide bombing outside the Sheraton Hotel in Karachi that killed 11 French engineers and three Pakistanis.\u003cbr/\u003eThe attempted assassination of Musharraf had been kept secret until Monday
