They are to remotely prospect the lunar crust and its atmosphere for potential resources and minerals, potential water ice and gases, to remotely map the moon's gravity and its magnetic field and to learn more and more about its size and what we can about the moon's core. Questions very relevant to the moon's origin, evolution and current state.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Dr. Wesley Huntress, NASA\u003cbr/\u003eThe Lunar Prospector is scheduled to take off from Cape , Florida on Monday evening.\u003cbr/\u003eThe first two stages of the Athena II launch vehicle will burn for about three minutes and carry the Lunar Prospector for about 60 miles, then there's a third stage in a smaller orbit adjustment module that will put it in a parking orbit. \u003cbr/\u003eThis whole process takes about 13 minutes. \u003cbr/\u003eThe payload doors open, and then about an hour into the mission the  injection stage is fired. \u003cbr/\u003eThis is a kick motor that puts it in a trajectory to the moon and about three hours into the mission the scientific instruments will start being deployed.\u003cbr/\u003eThe module then begins its 105 hour trip to the moon where it begins an orbit of about 100 kilometres with a mapping footprint that's about 150 kilometres wide. This orbit goes over the poles of the moon.
