\"red palm weevil\" is causing concern to the town's residents.\u003cbr/\u003eUntil recently palm trees flourished in southern Portugal.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, a new 'alien' species is threatening to wipe out many of the region's palm trees.\u003cbr/\u003eThe unwanted insect, scientifically known as rhynchophorus ferrugineus (or red palm weevil), has been spreading across the region in recent years.\u003cbr/\u003eNow, it has finally reached the Algarve.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the reasons behind the spread is human intervention.\u003cbr/\u003eInfected palm trees have been transported already infested from contaminated areas.\u003cbr/\u003eFor now, locals are battling the spread of the disease by cutting down dead and infected trees.\u003cbr/\u003eDesiderio Silva, the mayor of Albufeira, says all infected palm trees should be destroyed quickly.\u003cbr/\u003eEuropean Union Member States took emergency measures to prevent the introduction and the spread of this pest within the EU last May. \u003cbr/\u003eThat means that trees which are susceptible to infection must have a certificate proving that they are free of the pest. \u003cbr/\u003eThe measures also require that palm trees which are transport from one EU member country to another must have a 'plant passport' showing that they are 'red weevil' free. \u003cbr/\u003eEU states that are already infected, including Portugal, must implement emergency measures to limit the spread of the infestation, according to the emergency measures. \u003cbr/\u003eJose Entrudo Fernandes is the local director of agriculture and fishing department. \u003cbr/\u003eHe explains there are three stages of the insect's development, the larva, cocoon and adult insect. \u003cbr/\u003eOverlapping generations with all life stages can be present within the same palm tree. \u003cbr/\u003eThe insect's complete life cycle is about forty five days. \u003cbr/\u003eEach female lays about 300 creamy white, oval eggs in separate holes. \u003cbr/\u003eEach one is about 2.6mm long to 1.1 mm wide.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter just two to five days the eggs hatch into legless grubs which eat the soft tissues of the interior of the palm.\u003cbr/\u003eEach larva grows to a size of 50 mm in length and 20 mm width.\u003cbr/\u003eThen a pupa is formed and after a certain period the adult emerges from the cocoon and the cycle begins again. \u003cbr/\u003eSeveral stages of the insect may exist in one tree and remain there until the tree is destroyed and the adults have moved to a new host plant. \u003cbr/\u003eOnce infected, the palm trees must be cut in small pieces and ideally burned (if possible) or buried deeply. \u003cbr/\u003eSome palm owners prefer to bury the infested plants. \u003cbr/\u003eAlgarve resident, Brigitte Monteiro, was visibly upset as she described the destruction of one of her trees. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says that she hopes that none of her other trees will be
