Maria Luisa Destro putting pastries in display window \u003cbr/\u003eSome experts recommend more exercise, others recommend better eating habits.\u003cbr/\u003eNow a small town in Northern Italy is trying a new way of persuading its population to slim down - cash. \u003cbr/\u003eResidents in Varallo Sesia, a hill top town of 7,500, are being offered up to 750 Euros (1,008 US dollars) if they can forgo the extra helping of pasta in the upcoming year. \u003cbr/\u003e\"In modern society, being overweight is an issue,\" said Mayor Gianluca Bonanno.\u003cbr/\u003eBonanno is the man behind a week-old initiative that plans to give participants money as an incentive to help them lose the pounds and keep them off.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Prizes are of 50 euros (67 US dollars) for those who can reach their ideal weight. These prizes increase after five months by 200 euros,\" he said. \u003cbr/\u003e\"If they can hold on to their weight for a whole year, under our controls, people have the right to another 500 euros (672 US dollars).\"\u003cbr/\u003eSucessful participants, he added, could earn quite a bit of money.\u003cbr/\u003e\"If one behaves, there are a total 750 euros (1,008 US dollars)  to be earned,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eTo enroll, participants must present a medical certificate proving they are overweight. They can choose to be assisted by a dietitian, who helps determine their ideal weight, and a personal trainer.\u003cbr/\u003eSo far, 30 of the townsfolk have signed up.\u003cbr/\u003eGiorgio Regagli, a book seller in the town, admitted that he could stand to lose a bit of weigh, blaming good Italian cooking.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We eat too much and we eat well. The restaurants in the valley are very good,\" he said. \u003cbr/\u003eBut, he added, \"Yes, yes of course I will follow the mayor's advice to see whether I manage to lose some weight for my health.\"\u003cbr/\u003eEven Maria Luisa Destro, the owner of a local pastry shop, said that she would follow the mayor's advice, but she wasn't too concerned about the impact on business.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I am sure my clients will keep on coming. There are slim ones as well, you know. We're not all fat,\" said Maria Luisa Destro, pastry shop owner.\u003cbr/\u003eBut, she confided: \"We have a bit of a crazy mayor here.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe prevalence of obesity in Europe has tripled in the past two decades. \u003cbr/\u003eHalf of all adults and 20 percent of all children are estimated to be overweight, according to the World Health Organisation, while in the US that figure is around 31 percent of adults, or about 61 (m)  million people.\u003cbr/\u003eBonanno said the Town Hall had appropriated 10,000 euros  (13,405 US dollars) for the slimming project. \u003cbr/\u003eIt
