Aerial view of the highway to Tijuana \u003cbr/\u003eLocal police in the violent Mexican border city of Tijuana said on Thursday they have been forced to suspend patrols because soldiers sent by Mexican President Felipe Calderon have taken hold of most of their guns.\u003cbr/\u003eTijuana Public Safety Secretary Luis Javier Algorri Franco said that without arms it is too dangerous for the 2,000 strong police force to monitor the streets, where 13 officers were shot dead last year.\u003cbr/\u003eAlgorri said he had met with police chiefs, who said that local police without weapons may find themselves in danger and with no means of defence.\u003cbr/\u003eFor that reason, Algorri said, officers had been asked to stay off the streets until all weapons had been returned to them.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Tuesday, Calderon sent 3,300 soldiers and federal police into Tijuana, on the border with the US, to man checkpoints and hunt down drug gangs in an effort to crack down on drug gangs and corruption in the city.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government backed team swept police stations and took officers' guns for inspections.\u003cbr/\u003eFederal investigators allege a corrupt network of local police officers may support smugglers who traffic drugs into the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eDubbed \"Operation Tijuana,\" the mobilisation is the second major military offensive against drug gangs by Calderon, who took office on December 1 and promised to crack down on organised crime.\u003cbr/\u003eLast month, Calderon sent 7,000 troops to his native state of Michoacan in western Mexico, which has been plagued by execution-style killings and beheadings as rival gangs fight over marijuana plantations and smuggling routes.\u003cbr/\u003eDrug gangs were blamed for more than 2,000 murders nationwide in 2006 and have left a particularly bloody trail in Michoacan and Tijuana, where more than 300 people were slain last year.\u003cbr/\u003eBut opposition politicians and residents have expressed doubt that Calderon's highly publicised campaign will have much of an impact.\u003cbr/\u003eHis predecessor, Vicente Fox, also sent thousands of agents with orders to fight drug trafficking. Several alleged top kingpins were arrested during his six-year term. \u003cbr/\u003eBut those actions appeared to spark ever more violence, as other traffickers battled to take over the smuggling
