Various of people and animals at Pakistan/Afghan border\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors on Pakistan's border with Afghanistan fear that Afghan refugees are bringing a serious disease with them.\u003cbr/\u003eA number of cases of Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) have been reported in the border areas, and on Thursday an Afghan truck driver died of the disease after he's believed to have caught it from ticks on the livestock he was transporting.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the Fatima Jinnah Hospital in Quetta, near the Afghan border, three people are suffering from C-C-H-F, two of whom have recently come from Afghanistan.\u003cbr/\u003eThis has prompted fears that the situation may be far worse in Afghanistan itself.\u003cbr/\u003eThe highly contagious tick-born disease causes blood platelet levels to drop, preventing the blood from clotting.\u003cbr/\u003eVictims bleed to death through every orifice and die in considerable pain.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to a British newspaper, the outbreak of C-C-H-F on the Pakistan/Afghan border is the largest ever, with at least 75 people having caught the disease so far and eight having died.\u003cbr/\u003eWith evidence suggesting that the outbreak emanates from Afghanistan, doctors fear an epidemic if (m) millions of refugees flee across the frontier into Pakistan.\u003cbr/\u003eC-C-H-F has similar effects to the ebola virus - both diseases damage arteries, veins and other blood vessels and lead to the eventual collapse of major organs.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the Fatima Jinnah Hospital, an isolation ward with eight treatment beds and two observation bays have been set up.\u003cbr/\u003eA 65-year-old man from Afghanistan lay on one of the beds with streams of dried blood on his chin, nose and tongue.\u003cbr/\u003eThe facilities at Fatima Jinnah are basic, but the staff are treating patients even though there is a high risk of infection from spittle or blood.\u003cbr/\u003eOn another bed lay nine-year-old Ismail Sadiq, his body wracked with fever and a wad of cotton wool stuffed into each nostril to stop the bleeding.\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors have forbidden his family to visit him.\u003cbr/\u003eThe only people Ismail now sees are doctors and nurses wearing the complete \"barrier nursing\" outfit of sterilised hair net, mask, gloves, gown and overshoes.\u003cbr/\u003eA number of blood samples were sent to Pakistan's national virology testing centre in Islamabad and then on to South Africa's National Institute of Virology in Johannesburg for confirmation that the disease was Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever.\u003cbr/\u003eThe first known case of the disease was among Russian soldiers serving in the Crimea in 1944 and then among villagers living near the Congolese city of Kisangani in 1956.\u003cbr/\u003eNot until 1969 were scientists able to isolate the single virus common to both.\u003cbr/\u003eThe authorities in Pakistan have appealed to the World Health Organisation for additional supplies to help deal with the outbreak of C-C-H-F, including storage facilities for clean blood plasma and white blood cells which can be used to replace those lost by patients.\u003cbr/\u003eThe virus is widely found in the blood of sheep, cattle and other mammals across eastern Europe, Asia and Africa.\u003cbr/\u003eIt can be passed to humans by a species of tick common in the those areas.\u003cbr/\u003eIf caught in time, C-C-H-F can be treated by replacing enough of the lost body fluids to allow the patient's own immune system to take over and kill the
