The committee has acknowledged this is a serious and tragic problem for children and acknowledged it wants to protect children and we are confident that the committee will work with the Holy See to see that clergy sexual abuse stops. \"\u003cbr/\u003e9. Exterior UNHCR human rights sign\u003cbr/\u003eRoman Catholic campaigners and victims of sexual abuse by priests have met with U.N. human rights experts to press their case that the Vatican is violating a global treaty that protects children.\u003cbr/\u003eThe group, led by the Washington-based Catholics for a Free Choice, presented documents to the 10 members of the U.N. Committee on the Rights of the Child.\u003cbr/\u003eThe campaigners claim that high-profile abuse cases involving priests, most notably in the United States, show that the Catholic Church has failed to protect children as required in the treaty.\u003cbr/\u003eThey want the committee to name and shame the Vatican and force it to act.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The Holy See represents special challenges to the United Nations because it tries to have it two ways,\" said Frances Kissling, president of Catholics for a Free Choice.\u003cbr/\u003eThe committee's 10 independent experts meet in Geneva to examine the compliance of the 191 countries that have signed the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child. \u003cbr/\u003eThe treaty lays down basic rights for all children to food, shelter, education and protection from abuse and exploitation. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The Vatican had their chance to do something and they didn't do anything,\" said Mark Furnish, an attorney who claims he was abused by a priest in Rochester, New York, from the age of 12.\u003cbr/\u003eThere was no immediate comment from the Holy See mission to the United Nations in Geneva.\u003cbr/\u003eThe committee members met the group in an informal capacity and declined to comment afterwards, but Kissling said they asked Catholics for a Free Choice to provide more detail about the situation in individual
