Various of Pamuk's books on shelves\u003cbr/\u003eTurkish novelist Orhan Pamuk was on the front page of many Turkish newspapers on Friday after being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Swedish Academy said that the 54-year-old Istanbul-born Pamuk \"in the quest for the melancholic soul of his native city has discovered new symbols for the clash and interlacing of cultures.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSome people questioned by AP Television in Istanbul said they were proud and honoured that Pamuk has been awarded the prize.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Pamuk's award came at a sensitive time, according to Ali Riza Erdogan.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Orhan Pamuk is a world famous author, we are proud of this, we are honoured by him getting the prize. But we are also confused because of the timing, the day of his prize matches the same day of the Armenian Law in France. It is confusing and brings question marks to mind,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eFrench lawmakers approved a bill on Thursday that would criminalise denying the mass killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks around the time of World War I amounted to genocide.\u003cbr/\u003eTurkey acknowledges that great numbers of Armenians were killed in fighting and mass expulsions, but does not accept the label of genocide.\u003cbr/\u003eFrance has already recognised the mass killings of up to 1.5 (m) million Armenians from 1915 to 1919 as genocide.\u003cbr/\u003eUnder the bill, those who contest it was genocide would risk up to a year in prison and fines of up to 45-thousand euros (56-thousand US dollars).\u003cbr/\u003eArmenia accuses Turkey of massacring Armenians during World War I, when Armenia was under the Ottoman Empire. \u003cbr/\u003eTurkey says Armenians were killed in civil unrest during the collapse of the empire.\u003cbr/\u003eMany historians, and eyewitness accounts from the time, corroborate the events as genocide.\u003cbr/\u003eOrhan Pamuk has been one of the few Turkish writers to openly criticised the treatment received by ethnic minorities in his homeland.\u003cbr/\u003ePamuk was charged last year for telling a Swiss newspaper in February 2005 that Turkey was unwilling to deal with two of the most painful episodes in recent Turkish history: the massacre of Armenians during World War I, which Turkey insists was not a planned genocide, and recent guerrilla fighting in Turkey's overwhelmingly Kurdish southeast.\u003cbr/\u003eSome nationalists in his homeland regard the novelist as a traitor for belittling the Turks.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile some newspapers congratulated Pamuk for the award, others questioned the motivations of the Swedish Academy. \u003cbr/\u003eThe selection of Pamuk continues a trend among Nobel judges of picking writers in conflict with their own governments. \u003cbr/\u003eBritish playwright Harold Pinter,
