for an end violence that has left 34 people dead in recent weeks.\u003cbr/\u003eA curfew that had been in place throughout much of Indian-controlled Kashmir was lifted earlier on Friday.\u003cbr/\u003eStreets were deserted and shops closed as Kashmiris fell in line with a call by separatist leaders to observe the Indian Independence Day holiday as a \"black day.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut soon after Muslim Friday prayers ended, tens of thousands of people poured into the streets.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Srinagar, the region's main city, protesters burned Indian flags and raised an Islamic green flag at the clock tower in the city's main bazaar.\u003cbr/\u003eThey also burned effigies of Indian soldiers. \u003cbr/\u003eIn a separate incident in Srinagar later on Friday, protesters clashed with police. \u003cbr/\u003eInjured protesters on stretchers received medical treatment in hospital. \u003cbr/\u003eMore than six weeks of unrest in Indian-administered Kashmir have pitted the region's Muslim majority against its Hindu minority and left at least 34 people dead, many of them protesters shot during violent clashes with police and soldiers. \u003cbr/\u003eVillages have been attacked, police stations torched and, in at least one town, security forces were ordered to shoot on sight any protesters violating the curfew.\u003cbr/\u003eThe crisis began in June with a dispute over land near a Hindu shrine. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Hindu minority was angered when the state government reversed a decision to give 99 acres (40 hectares) of land to a Hindu trust to build facilities for pilgrims near the shrine. \u003cbr/\u003eMuslims had complained that the gift of land would alter the religious balance in the region.\u003cbr/\u003eThe spiralling unrest has unleashed pent-up tensions between Kashmir's Muslims and Hindus and threatened to snap the bonds between India and its only Muslim-majority state.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are also growing fears that the violence could drive a wedge between Hindus and Muslims in other parts of India, where Hindu nationalist political parties have been organising rival protests and calling for the government to give the land back to the shrine.\u003cbr/\u003eIndia's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh appealed to Kashmiri separatists to end their protest earlier on Friday, in an annual Indian Independence Day speech.  \u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking in a ceremony at New Delhi's historic Red Fort to mark the 61th anniversary of its independence from British rule, Singh expressed his concern at the unrest over the land transfer row and urged political parties to give up their divisive politics and work together to find a permanent solution. \u003cbr/\u003eSingh's call was promptly dismissed by a key Kashmiri separatist leader, Mirwaiz Omer Farooq, who said the protests symbolise the \"total rejection of India's rule in Kashmir.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThere is a long history of separatist movements in Kashmir, which has been divided between India and Pakistan since 1948. \u003cbr/\u003eMost were peaceful until 1989, when an armed rebellion began. \u003cbr/\u003eThe separatists want to see Indian-controlled Kashmir merged with Pakistan or given independence.\u003cbr/\u003eThe conflict, pitting the Indian government's troops against the guerillas, has so far killed an estimated 68-thousand people, a number of those civilians.\u003cbr/\u003eIndia accuses Pakistan of aiding the insurgents, a charge Pakistan denies.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
