Lausanne.
This beautiful city stands on the shores of Lake Leman in the French-speaking region of Vaud, close to Geneva.
150 metres above the lake stands a cathedral that dates back to the early Gothic period and was consecrated in 1275 AD by Pope Gregory X.
When construction started in 1175, the cathedral of Notre Dame de Lausanne (French for Our Lady of Lausanne) instantly became one of a kind.
Its primitive "Burgundian Gothic" design was similar only to churches in Paris, Picardy (France) and Canterbury in England.
After centuries of not being recognised, this building is now tipped as the most beautiful cathedral in all of Switzerland.
The entrance to the building is through the so-called 'Montfalcon portal' that takes its name from the last Catholic bishop the cathedral had before it was converted to Calvinism in 1536.
These sculptures represent the transition between the Late Gothic and Renaissance eras.
Like most Gothic churches, the cathedral has many gargoyles, carved stone grotesque figures that serve both to carry water from the roof and ward off evil spirits.
This impressive rose window dates back to the 13th century.
Its stained glass designs represent the medieval conception of the world or "imago mundi" with the four elements, four seasons of the year, twelve months and signs of the zodiac among many symbols.
After converting to Reformism, the interior of the cathedral lost many of its statues, altar paintings and ornaments, but nonetheless kept its elegance and austere beauty.
Despite the historical features of this cathedral, the jewel in the crown is only 10 years old.
This state-of-the-art organ constitutes a unique technological and musical achievement in itself.
It was built in America using Canadian, Italian and Swiss technology at a cost of six million Swiss francs ($6.38 million USD)
The case was designed by an Italian designer famous for his Bugatti, Alfa Romeo and Maserati car bodies and is intended to resemble an angel.
This musical marvel replaced a smaller one that was taken to a concert hall in Gandsk, Poland.
It has 6,737 pipes, ranging in size from a few centimetres to 32 feet (almost ten metres), five keyboards and a pedal board making it one of the largest in the world.
Besides the rose window, the stained glass work in the cathedral is relatively modern.
Half the works date back to the mid-19th century and the rest was installed in the 1920's and 30's.
Since 2003, the cathedral has played host to numerous music recitals with over twenty concerts every year by world-class musicians.
"Since the creation of this instrument we have six around thousand people. Twenty-five recitals each year. Which constitutes Switzerland's most important organ concert season program," says Jean Christophe Geiser, head organist at the cathedral.
Nearly half a million people visit the cathedral every year making it one of the country's most visited monuments.
Veronica Nuesh and her husband are from Peru and find it amusing visiting a church that used to belong to one faith and then moved to another.
"The cathedral dates back to 1275. Before the creation of the Helvetic Confederation. I've never seen before a church that used to be Catholic and was later dedicated to the Reformists. Never seen something like this before," says Nuesh.
Visitor Antoine Toublin thinks the cathedral is one of Switzerland's best kept secrets.
"I see it incredible, the volume of the building. Cathedrals are always amazing buildings. And this is one is the most ancient in Switzerland. They conduct continuous restoration work. The pipe organ is impressive. I look forward to listen to it," says Toublin.
Another jewel of the cathedral is the so-called "Painted Portal".
This achievement of architectural design once served as the main entrance to the building.
It depicts a series of twelve sculptures which represent pre-Christian prophets in its western wing and the Apostles and Evangelists in the eastern wing.
The entrance is crowned with a representation of Jesus Christ, still showing some of the original paint decoration.
It dates back to the 13th century and underwent extensive restoration in different phases between 1974 and 1991.
Like most of the building it was sculpted from local sandstone, a type of stone that requires constant restoration work to avoid irreparable damage from the elements.
"Water is the enemy of stone. You have to keep water away from the faade. Above all we work on the side of the stone exposed to the weather," says Pierre Lachat, head stone mason of the cathedral.
Restorers take their preservation work very seriously at the cathedral and work is often completed round the clock.
At the moment, these technicians are working on a part of woodwork in the ceiling with some tiles being preserved and in some cases replaced.
AP Television
Lausanne, Switzerland - June 1, 2013
1.
