enthusiasts to enjoy big name talents in a popular tourist location. \u003cbr/\u003eOrganisers hope that despite of economic pressures like the high price of fuel and the credit crunch, revellers will enjoy themselves and spend some hard earned cash, thus boosting the local economy. \u003cbr/\u003eNew Orleans is famous for its classic southern US culture, with its classic streetcars, picturesque neighbourhoods and warm, friendly people. \u003cbr/\u003eGreen streetcars rattle along regularly, and at US$1.25 per ride they are something tourists can't afford to miss.   \u003cbr/\u003eDavid Page and Kathy Sullivan of San Francisco are New Orleans musical devotees - they have missed only three years of the Jazz and Heritage Festival since 1985. \u003cbr/\u003eThis year economic pressures are affecting ordinary people across the US, but the couple were determined to put money aside for the trip to the Jazz Fest. \u003cbr/\u003eThe French Quarter is one of the most emblematic areas of New Orleans, with its mix of French, Spanish, Creole and American  architecture and unique blend of cultures that embody the French heritage and the eclectic mix of the city today. \u003cbr/\u003eTourists from all over the world and locals make up the mix in this energetic and stylishly bohemian neighbourhood. \u003cbr/\u003eLouisiana was ruled by the French for several decades in the 18th century, and shifted temporarily to Spanish rule in 1762. \u003cbr/\u003eWith the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, the region became part of the United States.  \u003cbr/\u003eThis year the City's tourism industry has been making a comeback, drawing visitors with events like the Sugar Bowl, the NBA All Star Game and the Jazz and Heritage Festival. \u003cbr/\u003eTourism official Mary Beth Romig says there are concerns that the tourist sector will be hit by the credit crunch ordinary people having less disposable income to spend. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever she quotes the travel service 'triple A' as saying that Americans will find money for their annual vacation in spite of the economic problems the country is facing. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Jazz and Heritage Festival, better known as Jazz Fest, brings in 350,000 to 400,000 visitors a year. \u003cbr/\u003eSince 1970, when Mahalia Jackson and Duke Ellington performed at the First New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the event has been attracting some great musicians the historic city of New Orleans. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Festival now features numerous genres including Jazz, gospel, Carribbean, African, Latin, folk, rock and funk. \u003cbr/\u003ePast guests include such greats as Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Fats Domino, the Temptations, and Wynton Marsalis. \u003cbr/\u003eLocal culture and cuisine also play a big part, with many enjoying food like jambalaya and crawfish as much as the music. \u003cbr/\u003eBut for many musicians, things haven't been the same since Hurricane Katrina hit, forcing many, like Brice Miller of the Mahogany Brass Band, to relocate. \u003cbr/\u003eJazz Fest attendance dropped from 400,000 in 2005 to 300,000 in 2006, the first event after Hurricane Katrina hit the city, festival officials said. \u003cbr/\u003eThe event ran for seven days in 2005, but only six in 2006 and last year, when 375,000 people attended spent an estimated $300\u003cbr/\u003emillion  according to Jazz Fest estimates.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year, for the first time since the hurricane wrecked the city in August 2005, a seventh day has once again been added.\u003cbr/\u003eMiller and his parents are still rebuilding their homes.  \u003cbr/\u003eFor Miller, who's been playing music since junior high, this makes Jazz Fest even more important than it was before, since many musicians can reunite at the Festival, seeing old friends and keeping the local music alive.   \u003cbr/\u003eMusician Jon Cleary came to New Orleans from England 28 years ago - he intended to stay for a two-week trip but ended up settling the in city. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says New Orleans is special because music is such an important part of the culture. \u003cbr/\u003eThe festival stretches over seven days and two weekends. \u003cbr/\u003eOpening day headliners included Sheryl Crow and Allison Krauss as well as reggae master Burning Spear. \u003cbr/\u003eMusic the first weekend also included the Count Basie Band featuring Patti Austin, Archie Bell and Billy Joel. \u003cbr/\u003eApril 27 headliners included Al Green, Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint and Cassandra Wilson. \u003cbr/\u003eThe festival's second weekend kicks off on a Thursday for the first time since Katrina. \u003cbr/\u003ePerformers May 1-4 include Santana, the Derek Trucks Band, Keb Mo and a Tribute to Mahalia Jackson featuring Irma Thomas.\u003cbr/\u003eStevie Wonder makes his Jazz Fest debut May 2.\u003cbr/\u003e Many festival regulars set up a headquarters, folding chairs, umbrellas, blankets, near one of the stages or in shaded areas where they listen to music near a favoured tent or stage.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's clear the music in New Orleans is the city's life blood - as the rain poured down in buckets on Saturday
