They walk, ride buses, climb inside rickety boats and hop on the back of motorbikes to reach patients who have no other source of medical care.
In collaboration with National Nutrition Centre (NNC), UNICEF started an intervention of micro-nutrient sprinkles in May-June 2012 for 3,000 children between the ages of six months and three years in Thabaung Township in Ayeyarwaddy Region.
The aim was to effectively address that according to UNICEF almost the 90 % of the children in this region have iron deficiency and other micronutrient deficiencies.
Ei Ei Soe, 32, mother of 1, year 8-month old boy Han Min Soe became convinced of the benefits of micronutrient sprinkles as she saw its effects on her child's health after he received it as the supplement since in May and June 2012.
"I feel so happy! Now my son can walk, and before he could not," she says.
Khin Aye New, 32, midwife says for the first time, there's finally reason to hope. But there is still much to be done, she says.
"There are many patients in the area but only few nurses in this centre," she says.
The no more than ten nurses working in this centre alone are covering a territory spanning 15 villages with 3,000 people.
In addition to delivering babies, they must immunise children and treat everything from malnutrition to malaria and measles in an area where 90 percent of young kids suffer worm infestations. The work is exhausting and they know that no matter how hard they push themselves, it will never be enough to help everyone.
Health Workers from Zee Phyu Kwin village distribute multinutrition sachets to all children from 2 months to 3 years to counter iron deficiency. Anaemia is a significant problem among children and pregnant women in the area.
Dr. Kyaw Win Sein, Nutrition Specialist for UNICEF in Myanmar says flooding in the Myanmar Delta contributes to the anaemia.
''Because they have problems with water sanitation, personal hygiene. However for most people, it is more important to just earn a living than have a proper nutritious food."
Myanmar was long shunned by the international community while the U.S. and others used economic sanctions to try to force the paranoid junta to clean up its dismal human rights record and allow democratic reforms to move forward.
During those years, people living in the country otherwise known as Burma suffered more and most were forced to pay for what little health care they received or do without.
As international donor aid poured into nearby countries, with Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos receiving $52, $43.50 and $23 per capita respectively in 2009, Myanmar got $7.50 US dollars.
But as the country continues opening its doors to the outside world, economic sanctions are being eased and historic visits such as the one earlier this year by US President Barack Obama are symbolising the start of a new era.
