orchestra, which it's hoped will make classical music more popular. .\u003cbr/\u003eThe Taman Suropati Chamber is a community of violin players which gets its name from the park where it holds sessions.\u003cbr/\u003eThe chamber was founded in 2006 by several local music teachers who'd been to musical performances in parks during a trip to Europe. \u003cbr/\u003eIt now claims to have over 100 members with various levels of experience. \u003cbr/\u003eThe violin rehearsals, which cost less than $20 monthly for newcomers, focus on playing Indonesian folk songs to encourage people, especially children, to embrace local culture. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Yasminka, the manager of the chamber, is convinced they're doing more than just spreading a love for folk songs.\u003cbr/\u003eShe believes that by taking the violin out of the air-conditioned luxury of a concert hall, the chamber has given a new life to a string instrument which many consider elitist.\u003cbr/\u003eShe also says membership of the chamber is open to the general public.\u003cbr/\u003eThe violin rehearsal usually starts with a collective warming up.\u003cbr/\u003eThen the students break into smaller groups based on their expertise levels.\u003cbr/\u003eEleven-year-old Winsa Daffa Daniswara has been going to the park rehearsals for a year now.\u003cbr/\u003eWinsa's mother learnt about the community from a feature story in a local magazine and took him there for violin practice as well as to play with other children.\u003cbr/\u003eWinsa has a dream of becoming a classical musician, and he hopes to sharpen his violin skills by practicing in the park.\u003cbr/\u003eAcross town, on the eastern side, a different kind of musical community is flourishing.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2005 a local music teacher, Budi Yuntono, opened his house to poor children living in the slums who were interested to learn how to play the violin, cello and guitar.\u003cbr/\u003eFree daily sessions are open for a few hours in the afternoon, and most children come to the workshop to learn playing the fiddle. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are currently 20 children who regularly attend Yuntono's music session, and about half of them are school dropouts.\u003cbr/\u003eYuntono enjoys teaching the children in the workshop and hopes they will love playing the violin as much as he does.\u003cbr/\u003e20-year-old school dropout Ujang Sofyan is one of the youngsters who often jam with his friends at Yuntono's workshop.\u003cbr/\u003eThey play a lot of popular songs during the sessions, but they also play some original tunes.\u003cbr/\u003eLately they have been rehearsing a song about the Ciliwung River, a heavily polluted river that runs through many slums in the city.\u003cbr/\u003eSofyan loves playing the fiddle because it has its own soul and he has fun with it. \u003cbr/\u003eMusic expert Bens Leo welcomedsthe presence of these unconventional violin sessions for children in the capital.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that Indonesians are generally lacking behind Singaporeans and Malaysians in their appreciation of  classical music.\u003cbr/\u003eThe fiddle is still largely unpopular among Indonesian youths, who are more attracted to guitars and drums.\u003cbr/\u003eLeo argues there needs to be more scholarship programs in the country to encourage children to become more familiar with violins and classical music. \u003cbr/\u003eHe also believes that learning classical music will benefit the children with its traditional values of discipline and team work.\u003cbr/\u003eBack at the park, music teacher Madong Parusik is excited about the future of classical music in the city.\u003cbr/\u003eHe hopes that the chamber will get to perform in public parks abroad as well as around different parts of Indonesia.\u003cbr/\u003eJamming sessions are always very lively in Yuntono's workshop.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd they might just set a new trend for loving classical
