US Customs Commissioner Robert Bonner says there is no foolproof plan for intercepting a terrorist's nuclear, chemical or biological attack. \u003cbr/\u003eBut ports are beefing up detection gear to sniff out radiation and take X-Ray images of freight containers. \u003cbr/\u003eEvery Customs inspector will have a pocket-sized radiation detector by January. \u003cbr/\u003eEquipment previously used at the Mexican border to detect drugs is being redeployed in the hunt for weapons of mass destruction.\u003cbr/\u003eBonner calls the US measures \"the last line of defence\" for a potential terrorist bomb. \u003cbr/\u003eHe called a recent joint endeavor with Canada a success, though no bombs have been found. The exchange sent US inspectors to major Canadian ports and Canadian inspectors to US ports. \u003cbr/\u003eBonner said he hopes to expand the programme to European and Asian nations, a plan that would put high-tech screening devices in high-traffic foreign ports. \u003cbr/\u003eFewer than a dozen ports in the world handle the majority of shipping containers headed to the US, convenient choke points for screening.\u003cbr/\u003eCountries such as Holland, Germany and Japan have reportedly been receptive to the idea because they know the potentially devastating economic consequences if terrorists detonate a bomb in a shipping container.\u003cbr/\u003eBonner expressed some frustration with shipping companies who provide late or incomplete manifests to the agency. Customs agents use these manifests to decide which containers to search.
