Close of snake's skull and fangs.
About two and a half million people are bitten by venomous snakes each year according to the World Health Organisation and 125- thousand of the victims result in death.
The highest number of these deaths occur in south east Asia, south Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.
Scientists at the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute Snake Farm in Bangkok are constantly producing cutting-edge anti-venoms which help to save countless lives.
Yet even the most seasoned and careful snake handlers aren't immune. Some have been bitten more than once, but are lucky they live to tell the tale.
They make it look easy, but don't be fooled. These king cobras are the most venomous snakes in the world. They grow up to five metres long and many of these expert handlers have already experienced what it's like to be bitten and poisoned by them.
One trainer had to have his right index finger amputated, another lost his left index finger. The king cobras aren't the only poisonous snakes here.
Dr. Taksay Vasaruchapong, the Veterinarian at the snake farm, says he needed to be treated in intensive care, and have an emergency operation after being bitten.
The king cobras aren't the only poisonous snakes here. Others include Thai cobras, kraits, vipers and pythons. Thai cobras are among the twelve most venomous snakes in the world. They live in lowland areas of Thailand and south east Asia.
When a cobra is disturbed it expands its hood and stands high off the ground. When a cobra bites its jaw locks onto the victim, and releases a potent venom which attacks the nervous system resulting in paralysis and death from respiratory failure.
Dr. Taksay Vasarunchapong's arm remains seriously scarred from the operations he needed and he still can't use his hand properly.
The snake farm is also home to many non-venomous snakes such as the Indo Chinese and copperhead rat snakes. The government has promoted the use of these snakes by farmers to tackle the problems of rats and other pests which are can devastate local crops.
Trainers are used to holding non-venomous copperhead snakes close to their faces. Even if these snakes managed to bite the handlers, the wounds would not be lethal and visitors get a thrill from holding them.
Some like this Burmese python can grow as long as five and a half metres and weigh up to seventy-one kilograms. But visitors are never allowed to go near venomous snakes.
Shows like this fascinate the tourists, but the main aim of this institute is research antidotes to snake bites, and it is one of the premier anti-venom research facilities in the world.
The snake farm has so far succeeded in producing six types of serum to treat bites from cobras, king cobras, banded kraits, Russell's vipers, Malayan pit vipers, and others. In most cases, only anti-venoms produced from the same type of snake that bit the victim will be effective in saving their life. All of these drugs are produced in the same way. Adult cobras are milked every few weeks.
The venom is either clear, or yellow, and contains a complex mixture of toxins and enzymes. Once the venom is collected, small doses of it are injected into horses, which develop antibodies to the venom.
This weekly dosage is gradually increased until the horse is able to produce its own natural anti-venom. To ensure that the medicine is strong enough, blood is drawn from the horse and tested at intervals.
When the anti-venom meets the required strength, a considerable quantity of blood is drawn from the horse, without causing harm to the animal, and preserved.
Next, the anti-venom is purified and the blood goes through a process of sedimentation.
Non-antibody-related proteins, which can cause allergies when administered to patients, are removed from the compound. The serum is then bottled and dehydrated. This makes it easy to transport and store for long periods.
When stored at a temperature of 4-degree Celsius, the serum has a shelf life of five years.
To ensure the serum's effectiveness and safety, a final quality control test is conducted on animals under laboratory conditions in compliance with World Health Organization standards.
On the second floor of the snake farm are photographs which show just how deadly and damaging venomous snakebites can be to humans.
When someone is bitten blood emerges from the punctured skin.
The area becomes swollen, bruised and painful. If they fail to get the anti-venom medicine in good time, they will bleed from the gums, eyes, nose and brain. Paralysis follows and then death.
Dr. Montri Chiobam uses a dummy to show visitors how to provide first aid to someone who has been bitten by a poisonous snake.
He says the most important thing is to clean the wound with water and mild soap and not rub or scrub it.
After that a bandage should be applied below and above the bite site. This is to try to prevent the snake venom from spreading to other parts of the body.
Finally, it is vital that the victim can't move the affected limb as this can also help spread the venom to other parts of the body. This is done by creating a splint using what is known as the pressure immobilization technique.
For the visitors who don't like the idea of getting too close, the farm has dozens of preserved snakes on display.
The institute also wants to educate people not to seek to destroy any snake they come across as many are not harmful.
Ataree Rungrog, the Veterinary Technologist, says people wrongly believe that snakes always attack first.
He insists that's not true and says snakes are one of few truly kind animals who deserve better
