Close of violinists playing\u003cbr/\u003eChildren from impoverished South African townships are being taught to play classical musical instruments. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's part of a project for under-privileged children that has seen some accepted professionally into the South African Philharmonic Orchestra.\u003cbr/\u003eSoweto Strings tells the extraordinary and moving story of an outstanding music project.\u003cbr/\u003eThese very young children - some even as young as 10-years-old - are learning the basics of musical notation and how to play together as an orchestra.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are part of Buskaid, a charitable trust that aims to give children from impoverished backgrounds from South Africa's townships the chance to develop their talents and channel their creative musical energy.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd this is their expert teacher Rosemary Nalden - she is also the founder of the Buskaid project.\u003cbr/\u003eShe is originally from the UK where she studied viola and singing at the Royal College of Music in London.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1992 she founded the charitable trust Buskaid after she heard a radio report about the difficulties a group of string players from Diepkloof in Soweto were facing.\u003cbr/\u003eShe raised the funds for her project by convincing 120 of her professional colleagues to take part in a mass busk at 16 UK railway stations - in just two hours they'd already raised over ÄÅ¼Ë6,000 (USD $9,500) for the South African township.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Buskaid Soweto String Project was established by Rosemary Nalden in 1997 in response to requests from the local Diepkloof community. \u003cbr/\u003eAt first it had just 15 members, including a few absolute beginners but has grown to host around 100 students ranging in age from four to 30, all of whom are drawn from the less privileged local community. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, hundreds more have to be turned down each year because of a lack of funding.\u003cbr/\u003eNalden now teaches around 40 pupils from Soweto, as well as continuing to raise funds for her Buskaid Trust. As well as fundraising the Trust receives money from the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust in United Kingdom, the Doshi group in South Africa and also the South African National Lottery.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2002 she was awarded an MBE in the Golden Jubilee Queen's Birthday Honours List, in recognition of her work with Buskaid.  \u003cbr/\u003eRosemary Nalden says: \"When I first came out to this country people told me that black people couldn't read music, it's a skill they could not learn. I mean they are very competent at music reading.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Buskaid Music School, which consists of seven separate studios, library and large rehearsal room, was opened in 1999 - but even this space is no longer large enough for the thriving school and plans are underway to convert a neighbouring house and workshop.\u003cbr/\u003eThe students regularly record CDs of their work and have toured Europe several times. The ensemble has performed to former President Nelson Mandela, Queen Elizabeth II, and the US First Lady Michelle Obama. \u003cbr/\u003eNalden says: \"It's not just a child, it's the whole community that this has an effect on. My whole idea is to broaden the reach of... is to bring the world into South Africa and South Africa over to the world.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral of the young musicians who have come through Buskaid have gone on to become professional - like 28 year-old Samson Diamond who now plays with the South African Philharmonic Orchestra.  \u003cbr/\u003e28-year-old Mathapelo Matabane is from Diepkloof, Soweto - she has a passion for the viola and has been playing for 13 years.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I always was fascinated by the sound that the viola made, so I always wanted to play, and then when I joined
