Various of supermarket
Want to lose weight? The try eating.
That's one of the strategies being developed by scientists experimenting with foods that trick the body into feeling full
Everyone knows that if you want to lose weight you have to eat less, but the solution isn't that simple.
So scientists are experimenting with ways to trick the body into feeling full.
They're experimenting with simple foods found on everyone's shopping lists.
Bread, cheese, milk, soups and sauces can all be developed to trigger a brain signal which acts as an appetite suppressant according to Doctor Peter Wilde, at the Institute of Food Research.
He's part of a government funded team which is hoping to find an answer to the obesity problem.
Wilde's research copies the body's mechanism for digesting fat which normally gets broken down in the first part of the small intestines.
If you indulge in a meal saturated with fats your body will only digest the fat entirely when it reaches further down in the intestines.
That sparks a release of hormones that suppress the appetite.
During his research, Wilde coats fat droplets in foods with modified proteins from plants, which means it takes longer for the enzymes to break down fat, which isn't digested until it hits the far reaches of the intestines.
At that point, intestinal cells send a signal telling the brain the body is full, even though the body hasn't had a high-fat meal.
If the fat had been digested earlier in the intestines, an appetite suppressing signal would not be sent.
Wilde insists that the the treated foods would still be an entirely natural product which wasn't processed.
He says the compounds used to coat the fats are natural compounds called galacto lipids which are found in cereals like oats and wheat and in the green leaves of vegetables like cabbage and spinach.
The team is looking at ways in which they can be used to stabilise the fat in sauces and dairy products, so they naturally slow down the digestion of the fat and trick us into thinking we're full.
Although some medicines and diet products also suppress appetite, Wilde believes helping people to reduce weight this way is beneficial because it allows them to eat normally and he thinks it could be incorporated into snacks to make sure people don't eat too many.
The food industry is also interested in developing foods which simultaneously suppress appetite. It's already begun a study testing a seaweed extract which reduces fat absorption by cutting the level of glucose digested by the body before it gets broken down in the large intestine.
But the British Dietetic Association (BDA), which represents medically trained nutritionists in UK hospitals, says it has concerns about the efficacy of foods which rely on fooling you into thinking you've eaten enough.
The BDA's Anna Suckling, who works at the Norfolk University Hospital, says it's important for people to get into a healthy regime which involves regular exercise and well balanced meals.
She says it's time we stopped looking for quick and easy solutions which don't work in the long term, because people who lose weight steadily tend to have made the difficult changes in their lifestyles.
This means they don't put the weight back on as soon as they come off of their controlled eating regimes.
Suckling says she'd be against foods which were marketed purely for their weight loss value, without addressing lifestyle issues.
Also she stresses that people don't just eat because they're hungry, but for psychological reasons such as stress and depression, and appetite suppressing foods wouldn't help these people.
According to the BDA, people are spending less time cooking their meals at home. It now takes twenty minutes to cook an evening meal whereas in the 1980s it used to take two hours.
It says the types of foods that we're choosing are also very different to foods we used to eat.
We're having more packaged and convenience foods which are often higher in sugar, salt and fats than unprocessed foods.
Scientists and food companies also have to overcome the natural suspicion of shoppers who are more likely to question what they see on the supermarket shelves than a few decades ago.
In Europe, the controversy over genetically modified crops and artificial ingredients have tended to make people more suspicious of what they put in their mouths.
The research being carried out by Dr Wilde and his team is still at the experimental stage and it'll be at least a year before their techniques are sufficiently sophisticated to be used in a major human trial.
Clients are reminded:
