It's a very effective form of training, but it's very hard,  so as soon as you go over 20 seconds its very painful. You make the muscles very acidic and the sensation is very difficult, meaning normal people have great difficulty in doing that, so we had to reduce it to under 20 seconds and we choose 8 seconds through a series of trial and error. 5 seconds is too small, 15 seconds was a bit too long, 8 seconds with a 12 second down time, relaxing their legs barely exercising, seemed to be the optimal ratio.\"\u003cbr/\u003e13. Wide people swimming in the ocean\u003cbr/\u003eScientists in Australia have come up with a new form of exercise that they say burns body fat three times faster than regular training. \u003cbr/\u003eThe results of a study by researchers at the University of New South Wales showed that working out is more effective when short bursts of intense aerobic exercise are followed by periods of slow movement.\u003cbr/\u003eThe method is thought to produce more fat burning chemicals in muscles and under the skin than with regular exercise.\u003cbr/\u003eResearchers studied 45 overweight women over a period of 15 weeks.  Participants did 20 minute sessions on exercise bikes three times a week, sprinting in bursts of eight seconds followed by 12 seconds of  light cycling.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the start of the study Louise Tamayo weighed 80kg (176 lbs) and was struggling with her weight. \u003cbr/\u003eBy doing three 20 minute sessions a week she lost 8kgs (18lbs)  over the 15 week period without making any changes to her diet. \u003cbr/\u003eLouise says she was very sceptical about the new method at first, but she thought she'd give it a go to see if it worked. \u003cbr/\u003eResearchers looked at two groups, one doing the 20 minute sessions of interval training and the other doing 40 minute sessions of exercise at a steady level.\u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Steve Boutcher, the man behind the study says they found that sprinting in this way reduced insulin resistance by about 31 percent compared to 8 percent for steady exercise. (Increased insulin resistance causes obesity).\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the American Academy of Family Physicians a reduction in insulin resistance is important  for  those at risk of type 2 diabetes,  hypertension and cardiovascular disease. \u003cbr/\u003eBoutcher says that interval training is  a very effective form of exercise, but it's tiring and causes the muscles to become acidic and painful if it is done for too long.\u003cbr/\u003eThe study did not determine the exact reason why the body burns so much fat with interval training, but it is thought that it triggers a rapid hormone response in the body.\u003cbr/\u003eBoutcher says the hormone catecholamine tells the body to burn fat and it's known that rapid sprinting causes catecholamine levels to increase. \u003cbr/\u003eFor Tamayo, taking part in the study has improved her daily lifestyle considerably.  \u003cbr/\u003eTamayo says at 80kgs (176lbs) it was hard to get around. She noticed the results in a few weeks. Her clothes seemed looser and she found walking upstairs easier.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the Australasian Society for the Study of Obesity recent research estimates that more than half of all Australian women (52%) and two-thirds of men (67%) are overweight or obese. That amounts to almost 60% of the adult population. \u003cbr/\u003ePersonal trainer and spinning instructor Nadine Lafleur teaches spinning classes at Sydney's Bondi Beach.  The popular form of exercise uses interval training on bikes and is known for it's intense calorie burning.\u003cbr/\u003eLafleur says that most people, particularly women, start an exercise programme in order to lose weight. \u003cbr/\u003eLafleur adds she would not recommend spinning to anyone who has not done any exercise for more than two years because it requires a high level of fitness. \u003cbr/\u003eAround Sydney residents had a mixed reaction to the study.\u003cbr/\u003eOne said while the research may be true it was more about what people ate than how much they exercised.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother said he'd rather stick with traditional exercise\u003cbr/\u003eBut another said the impressive results meant she'd probably try it out.\u003cbr/\u003eThe good news for those who want to try the 8 second sprints is that, according to Boutcher, you don't need an exercise bike. The method  works with running, swimming and outdoor cycling just as well. \u003cbr/\u003eNOTE - the findings have been presented a two academic conferences, one in the US, but it's not been published
