Filmmaker Azza El-Hassan Special Jury Award.\u003cbr/\u003eThe second Independent Arab Screen Festival has gathered filmmakers from all over the Arab world to meet and show their work - the results of months of hard effort.\u003cbr/\u003eThe festival is the first of its kind to be held in the Gulf state of Qatar.  It's sponsored by Al-Jazeera, one of the most independent and outspoken broadcasters in the region.\u003cbr/\u003eShort films, features and documentaries were been shown alongside cinematic classics, between 17th and 23rd March.  Many of the independent filmmakers who attended feel that it's a step in the right direction.\u003cbr/\u003ePalestinian filmmaker Sobhi Al-Zobaidi's documentary 'Light At The End Of The Tunnel' explores the effects of detention on the half a million Palestinians who have been through Israeli prisons since 1967. He explains why he feels a responsibility to show an international audience what is happening to Palestinians.\u003cbr/\u003eThe festival provides the opportunity to show films about the difficulties of returning to work in a region dominated by conflict and war.  The documentary 'News Time', by Azza El-Hassan, shows how the daily headlines come to dominate the lives of four young boys in a Palestinian neighbourhood.  El-Hassan's way of resisting the political situation impressed the festival's judges - his film won the Special Jury Prize.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Arab film festival was setup to provide an environment beyond the reaches of government censorship.  The filmmakers say they never forget the reality of exile, but the independence has allowed many new artistic freedom.\u003cbr/\u003eThe festival has been hailed as a meeting of minds and ideas for a new generation of filmmakers.  And with other Arab festivals including Lebanese 'Shams' springing up, young filmmakers are creating their own futures.\u003cbr/\u003eThe festival finished in style with an award ceremony, seen by the many filmmakers present who have struggled to make their voice's heard, as a resounding vote for the future of independent Arab cinema.\u003cbr/\u003eUnfortunately the Palestinian films \"Light at the End of the Tunnel\" and \"News Time\" are unlikely to be shown in Palestine in the near future - all the cinemas are closed. Similarly, WALID AL-MEKDADI's film \"Sasha\" is unlikely ever to be seen in his native Iraq, at least while Saddam Hussein remains in power - the director is banned from returning and, while the film
