Augmented reality is a computer, so the digital world reading the physical world and the physical world manipulating the digital\"\u003cbr/\u003eUsers navigate to a free website using a webcam. \u003cbr/\u003eOnce players are signed in, the Air Guitar T-shirt and computer work together to do the rest. The technology enables you to play in time to the music, scoring points as you go, while recording your session for other users to see. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The webcam picks up the symbol here on the centre of the guitar, on the T-shirt and then when I hide that symbol it plays a note and obviously if you play in time you get green,  you get added points, play off time you get red, you get points deducted,\" says Luke Khan.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year (2011) the Air Guitar T-shirt won an innovation award at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas, USA. \u003cbr/\u003eThe inventors are a small design firm based in Cardiff, South Wales. They believe it''s the first time augmented reality has been used in this way and have put \"wannabee musicians\" at the heart of gameplay. \u003cbr/\u003eFK Create''s Warren Fauvel explains the simple game plan:\u003cbr/\u003e\"You can make it easier or harder by saying you have to be more or less accurate, so it''s a really kind of simple scoring system added to it, so it''s lets you create some gameplay, some competition, some fun out of it.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAs there''s no hardware or microchips in the T-shirts. The creators say they can be sold for a reasonable price alongside other band merchandise at gigs and other music venues.\u003cbr/\u003eThe technology itself isn''t new, just the way it''s being used for the Air Guitar T-shirt.  \u003cbr/\u003eAugmented reality has been around since the 1960s. But it is now being used in products aimed at the consumer says Warren Fauvel:\u003cbr/\u003e\"Facial recognition in cameras, when you''re tagging friends on Facebook, you can auto recognise, these kinds of things are augmented reality. It''s a process of recognising what''s going on in the real world or in an image and then representing it back to you with some extra thing on it, some augmented reality.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Last Republic say they wanted to give their fans the chance to interact with their music and offer them an alternative to the traditional merchandise sold at gigs and concert venues.\u003cbr/\u003eJonnie Owen, lead singer of The Last Republic explains why they were keen to put their track together with the T-shirt:\u003cbr/\u003e\"It''s just another opportunity for the fans to become part of the band, so they come to the gig and they have a lot of involvement with that in singing along and jumping in down and keeping us going on stage, but when they''ve got home and they can put it in front of their webcam and play along with our music. I suppose it''s lots of fun and they enjoy playing along with the band\"\u003cbr/\u003eUsers are able to post their highest scores and videos on the Air Guitar T-shirt website.  Already hundreds of fans of The Last Republic are strumming along. \u003cbr/\u003eThe band and inventors admit that it is a marketing strategy but they argue it has helped to them to grow a larger community around their music. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I enjoy playing the game myself and playing against the fans and we''re all competing and trying to get higher scores than each other and it''s proper kicked off, it''s a lot of fun from our point of view you know?,\" says Jonnie Owen.\u003cbr/\u003eSince getting involved with the Air Guitar T-shirt last year, the band say they''ve discovered fans around the world that they didn''t know existed. \u003cbr/\u003eThat''s all thanks to the global accessibility of the website. It''s also proved a success on their recent tour says keyboard player Dave Llewellyn:\u003cbr/\u003e\"We''ve set this up at a couple of gigs and there''s a lot of interest from it and people get well into it, it''s pretty good, it''s pretty good.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSo long as you have a computer and webcam, the only piece of equipment that users need to buy is the Air Guitar T-shirt. \u003cbr/\u003eBoth the software and access to the website are free of charge.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the moment you can only strum along in time with the tempo of the track.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the creators hope to add note recognition and other features in the future, says Luke Khan:\u003cbr/\u003e\"The next level is to take it to more bands, to have more tracks and create a site where fans can come and
