Just the level of taste is extraordinary,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eThe excitement among the art world in unprecedented. \u003cbr/\u003eThe collection, formed over 50 years by Saint Laurent and Berge  is an exceptional opportunity for collectors to acquire pristine works by masters such as Mondrian, Matisse, Leger and Picasso.\u003cbr/\u003eAlso going to auction is a collection of  renaissance silver, art deco furniture and several sculptures - one of which is a Roman marble torso of Mercury dated around the  1st - 2nd century A.D. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to art market correspondent for the London Evening Standard, Godfrey Barker the pieces are the most valuable single owner collection ever to come to market.   \"He (Saint Laurent)  has bought impressionist and modern pictures with great courage. ($32 398827 - $38 878593). \u003cbr/\u003eSaint Laurent was among the most influential designers during the most important era of Parisian fashion.\u003cbr/\u003eHe changed the way women dressed, most enduringly by making it glamorous and feminine to wear trousers with the introduction in 1966 of  'Le Smoking' tuxedo suit for women. \u003cbr/\u003eFormer fashion editor, now editorial director of Christies Publications, Meredith Etherington-Smith, describes the designer as having a  'voracious eye', that  \"ate up things and made connections between things you wouldn't normally connect.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThis ability to see the beauty in the most unlikely of connections is, according to Etherington-Smith, what established Saint Laurent and Berge as cultural icons. \"They're men of quite differing tastes, but those tastes met in the middle, because they had a muse and that muse is a woman called Vicomtesse de Noailles who collected everything. It's really about high levels of taste,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter the death of Yves Saint Laurent in June last year, Berge decided he wanted  the collection to be enjoyed by other people as he and his dearest friend had enjoyed them.\u003cbr/\u003eYves Saint Laurent was widely considered the last of a generation that included Christian Dior and Coco Chanel, and he made Paris the fashion capital of the world with the Rive Gauche, or Left Bank, as its elegant headquarters. \u003cbr/\u003eSaint Laurent was born in the Algerian coastal city of Oran. His ashes rest in neighbouring Morocco, at the Majorelle botanical garden beside a villa in Marrakech that he and Berge bought years ago.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge
