Wide of energy race
Technical advances in imaging are changing cutting edge surgery.
Doctors at this year's Royal Society's Summer Science exhibition in London say advances mean it's less about invasive surgery and more about using robots for navigating around the body to carry out operations.
This is what happens when surgeons collaborate with scientists.
New techniques which are steadily transforming surgery.
As instruments are constantly updated and sophisticated, new non invasive types of surgery become available.
This equipment helps surgeons to isolate the site of an aneurysm to within a couple of millimetres.
Less invasive surgery means we recover quick and are less prone to infection.
This technique is being perfected by research scientists who work alongside clinical doctors, each informing the the other.
Dr. Graeme Penny's team at St. Thomas's Hospital in London came up with this when surgeons were spending longer and longer on operations.
He says "when you have an aneurysm in the abdomen and if you'd had one of these involving certain arteries that went out to your kidneys for example, they couldn't really be treated by minimally invasive surgery up until a few years ago."
This is because "there's been big advances in the instruments that are used now, but they're involved in really complicated operations, so the devices need to be positioned very accurately and they need to be positioned to within two millimetres accuracy and the operations can take to between three hours to seven hours in length."
According to Penny the accuracy is down to the use of several layers of scans "what we're doing here is using information that was taken before the operation, so it's images from a CT scanner, so it's nice three dimensional images, they're the images, or the scan that the operation would have been planned upon and we're matching them."
In a specially constructed dome visitors watch transfixed as microscopic plankton are transformed to giants floating by on a circular screen.
It's so serene some visitors even lie down to see the world of the ocean surface travel around them.
But this installation has an extremely important message.
It's the result of research in the North Sea conducted by Dr. Richard Kirby of Plymouth University.
He argues we have become too dismissive of these small creatures which indicate how the environment around us is constantly changing our climate.
Kirby calls the plankton his unsung heroes.
His team has discovered that plankton is altering it's distribution and its abundance as the sea's surface temperature warms.
They live near the surface of the water because the plant like cells of the phytoplankton need sunlight to grow.
The creatures that feed upon them live in the same place near the surface.
The surface of the sea is in contact with the atmosphere and as this is warming with climate change the temperature of the sea's surface is also changing.
This has a serious effect on fisheries
Kirby is keen to tell the story of how plankton are central to the carbon cycle "how they influence the atmosphere, how they contribute to the oxygen in the air we breathe, how they effect the earth's climate, even how if you go to the seaside and you smell the sea air, the saltiness that little aroma, that's due to the plankton, the phytoplankton, they release chemicals of course which go into the atmosphere, those chemicals react with sunlight and they give the aroma of the seaside, those same chemicals when they react cause little particles. What our research has shown is that injury itself activates activated protein C and that causes a destruction of the fibrin mesh and the clots become weak and non functional."
The race to provide ourselves with increasingly efficient sources of energy sometimes leads scientists to create a great deal of fun.
These three generators are run by the friction of fingers rubbing a metal panel, a bicycle and the hammering percussion of a glockenspiel.
It's all about energy harvesting, or scavenging depending on your preference.
The energy is captured in tiny amounts from the heat, light, motion, sound and vibration that would normally be lost in day to day living.
It all seems light hearted now, but the research behind
