Wide shot of hearing\u003cbr/\u003eExecutives from data brokers LexisNexis and Choicepoint Inc. testified before lawmakers on the US Senate Judiciary Committee in Washington on Wednesday.\u003cbr/\u003eInitially, the hearing's focus was to be the security breach by Choicepoint in February. \u003cbr/\u003eBut as news unfolded that a breach at LexisNexis may have exposed personal information of more than three-hundred-thousand people, Wednesday's inquiry took on a new urgency.\u003cbr/\u003eSenators promised a tough new crackdown on the loosely regulated commercial data-brokering business.\u003cbr/\u003eData brokers collect personal information on consumers - from drivers license and Social Security numbers to medical records - and sell it to insurance companies, prospective employers, the IRS, law enforcement agencies and others.\u003cbr/\u003eBut a string of recent breaches, most prominently at LexisNexis and ChoicePoint, have put the personal information of hundreds of thousands of US citizens at risk.\u003cbr/\u003eLondon-based Reed Elsevier, which owns LexisNexis, revealed on Tuesday that criminals may have breached computer files containing the personal information of 310-thousand people. That's a tenfold increase over the 32-thousand people that the company reported were put at risk in March. \u003cbr/\u003eThe company said the fraud involved the improper use of identities and passwords belonging to legitimate customers and insisted its technology structure was never hacked or penetrated.\u003cbr/\u003eTestifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Kurt Sanford, LexisNexis' president and chief executive for US corporate and federal markets, apologised to those individuals whose information was compromised and promised them counsellors to help them clear their credit reports of any information relating to fraudulent activity.\u003cbr/\u003eChoicePoint disclosed a similar scam in February that it said involved as many as 145-thousand Americans.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral members of the Senate have introduced legislation, including requirements that consumers be notified when their personal information is breached - a provision now in
