This is the bitter truth,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003ePrime Minister Manmohan Singh, who has come under intense criticism in recent months for presiding over a corrupt and paralysed government, stunned the country with last week's raft of reforms. \u003cbr/\u003eThe government announced a reduction in massive subsidies for diesel fuel and cooking gas. \u003cbr/\u003eIt also opened up the country's enormous retail sector to foreign competitors, allowed local airlines to sell stakes to foreign carriers and pledged to sell off chunks of four state-run companies.\u003cbr/\u003eOpponents said the fuel hike would spark higher inflation and hurt the country's poor. \u003cbr/\u003eThey said opening up the retail sector to foreign giants would also crush the nation's millions of small retail shops.\u003cbr/\u003eUS-based Wal-Mart, British-based Tesco PLC, French-based retailer Carrefour and others have been interested in entering India, a country of 1.2 (b) billion people where retail is the second-biggest industry behind agriculture.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cabinet's decision - after a similar proposal was withdrawn under withering criticism last year - immediately generated optimism that a government plagued by scandal was finally breaking out of the political paralysis that had stifled reforms for months.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, political opponents and even some allies, decried the decision to allow in international supermarket chains, saying it would hurt small retailers and farmers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Chief Minister of West Bengal and President of Trinamool Congress party - an important ally for the ruling Congress party - Mamata Bannerjee walked out of the alliance on Wednesday after her 72-hour deadline to roll-back the reforms was not respected.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, even amongst small retailers, there are mixed opinions on whether the entrance of retail giants like Walmart will affect their business.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile some believe this will drive the crowds away from the local markets, others feel that they will do just fine.\u003cbr/\u003e\"If FDI comes in, our work will get affected.
