But Saturday's crowd -- almost evenly balanced among racial groups -- numbered only about a thousand and included as many women and children as men.\u003cbr/\u003eOrganisers said the low turnout was the result of a soccer match being held nearby, but they stressed the importance of the campaign. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think the march is very important. Wife-beating, child-beating and other forms of domestic\u003cbr/\u003eviolence also are accepted in many communities of the multicultural country.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the lack of interest in Saturday's march seemed to show the unwillingness of many South African men to think about a break from the male-dominated behaviour they grew up with.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral Cabinet ministers took part in the four-kilometre (2.4 mile) march through Pretoria to the Union Buildings.\u003cbr/\u003eSouth African President Nelson Mandela, 79, appeared at a rally after the march.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003eOur society has behaved as if man had no power to change these things.
