Various close ups of butterflies
The largest insectarium in the United States is attracting swarms of visitors in New Orleans.
It has proven a well-deserved success to the city, much of which was destroyed in 2005 by the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina.
Today, hundreds of tourists, children and families, visit the Audobon Insectarium to experience and learn more about the world of insects and the important role they play in our lives.
Entomologists are making the case that it's worth getting to know the neighbours beneath our feet, and people in New Orleans are listening.
A confirmation comes from the Audubon Insectarium, the first major attraction to open in the city since Hurricane Katrina, which has been drawing crowds since its opening in June.
The 23,000-square-foot (7000-square-meter) facility, housed in the historic U.S. Custom House on Canal Street, has about a hundred species on display at a time and is expecting 350-thousand visitors in the first year.
The Audubon Nature Institute has a long history in New Orleans, where it has a collection of nine museums and parks.
But the Insectarium is the first to focus only on six-legged creatures.
The facility, which is the largest of its kind in the United States, has gotten a great response so far.
Children have been delighted by the giant insects, their reactions to the bugs quickly changing from fear to fascination.
With over 900-thousand species of insects now known, these creatures play a key role in the ecology of the planet.
While they're easy to overlook, insects are essential to life on earth as we know it - they decompose nutrients and aerate the soil, allowing plants to grow, and they also take care of pollination.
At the Field Camp section of the exhibit, children can get a sense of the tools they would need for outdoor research.
Some of the bugs, like the Madagascar Hissing Cockroach, can be touched - these wingless critters, commonly kept as pets, use the black holes on the edges of their shells to expel air and make a hissing sound.
Anne Barker, an entomologist (insect expert) says that "everyone likes to say that they touched a roach."
Zack Lemann, Visitor Programs Manager at the Audubon Insectarium, explains the exhibits with contagious enthusiasm.
He says social insects like ants are some of the most popular on display, with other showstoppers including honeybees, leafcutter ants and beetles.
An insect enthusiast since childhood, Lemann says he has trouble picking a favorite, but some of the ones he likes best are velvet ants and spiders in general.
Insects are also a great source of food and visitors at the Insectarium won't want to miss Bug-Apetit, the exhibit's in-house bug caf.
Presenters at the Insectarium cooked up some "bugyets" - these are the Insectarium's version of the Louisiana beignet, with cooked crickets sprinkled in for texture.
Children and adults alike were quite impressed by the buggy treats.
Meanwhile, in the butterfly hall, visitors marveled at the beautiful insects.
Lemann says the hall is an excellent environment for longwing butterflies, which are accustomed to dappled light.
Children got to witness the newly emerged butterflies being released into the hall, where they fed on fruit and flowers, or just sat and fluttered their wings.
Keyword
