Wide of Princess of Wales greenhouse with cyclist\u003cbr/\u003eMore than six thousand tropical flowers are in bloom at London's Kew Gardens, brightening up the British winter. \u003cbr/\u003eNearly a third of the flowers on display at the Tropical Extravaganza are orchids, with the theme of this year's show \"the Forces of Nature\".\u003cbr/\u003eIn the middle of a harsh British winter colourful tropical flowers are in bloom.\u003cbr/\u003eBasking in 22 degrees inside this greenhouse these vibrant flowers are thriving.\u003cbr/\u003eLara Jewitt, manager of the Princess of Wales conservatory, says: \"We've got about 6,500 hybrids, really tropical plants, orchids, bromelias, anthuriums, and they're just sort of dripping from every part of the conservatory.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe orchids are here for Kew's Tropical Extravaganza.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is the first festival of the year for the Royal Botanic Gardens and a chance to enjoy some exotic flowers in a balmy environment.\u003cbr/\u003eBut there's also an educational aspect to the Tropical Extravaganza.\u003cbr/\u003eKew is running adult day courses for keen amateur gardeners, teaching them how to grow exotic orchids in the home environment. \u003cbr/\u003eJewitt says: \"The public can definitely learn about how to grow them. In the conservatory we will have roaming guides so they can ask them about how to reflower their orchids. But we'll also have lessons that they can book in museum number one, and there are also behind the scenes tours of the tropical nursery which holds the world's most comprehensive orchid collection.\"\u003cbr/\u003eA day course in growing orchids in your own home costs �50 (USD 80).\u003cbr/\u003eThe theme for this year's festival is 'Forces of Nature' focussing on the four classical elements of: Earth, Wind, Fire and Water.\u003cbr/\u003eFor example, in the water exhibition mangrove trees rise out of the pond.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd in the air section hanging seed scatterers spin on fine threads.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There are so many that I love in this house, it's quite a unique glass house. This delicate restrepia cuprea is found in Colombia.\u003cbr/\u003eOrchids have always held a fascination for humans and have been used for their scent by perfumers, in cookery (the vanilla is a type of orchid), and in traditional Chinese medicine.\u003cbr/\u003eBut in 19th Century England, orchid fascination reached new heights. The first orchids brought back to the country by explorers fetched high prices at auction, in 1890 a single orchid sold for �1,500 (USD 2,370) (around �100,000 today) (USD 158,000).\u003cbr/\u003eJewitt explains: \"People go crazy for orchids. The Victorians went off and searched for them and killed for them. I don't know, for me there's a few different things why I love them. The diversity, they're the largest flowering plant family there is in the world, they grow in pretty much every country in the world, but also how they attract their pollinator. Most plants have a reward for their pollinator, which is nectar. Some orchids have that and some of them don't - so they have all these deceitful ways to entice their pollinator in.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut there's a negative side to our fascination with orchids.\u003cbr/\u003eOf the world's 25,000 orchid species, some 10 per cent are believed to be endangered in their native habitats according to Kew Gardens. \u003cbr/\u003eThe clearance of natural vegetation for crop cultivation or forestry, or for urban development is the main threat orchids face. \u003cbr/\u003eThe temperature in London is around two degrees above freezing, so Kew Gardens is hoping the recent cold snap will drive tourists into its hot houses.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think it's a great time of year to come and see the Tropical Extravaganza.
