But in Delhi it's a different story.
The reason? For most of the year the river resembles little more than a sewage drain.
The rainy season of July-August sees the river in full flow, although it's still dirty.
The public art initiative - with works by four Indian artists and four German artists - links the Yamuna with Hamburg's Elbe river.
A 19th Century span bridge forms the backdrop to an ongoing Indo-German art project along the river Yamuna in India's capital city.
Co-curator Ravi Agarwal, an artist and an environmentalist, says the Yamuna and the Elbe are similar in many aspects but also very different.
"It is about the Yamuna and the Elbe, which are very different rivers in one way but also very similar. Similar because both are flood plain rivers, both are very central to the cities themselves but also the idea that one day, the Yamuna can be like the Elbe because Elbe is this very engineered river which is completely clean but has this big debate of how much more to engineer it or to un-engineer it. It is something which is very harmful for the environment. The Hindus take a holy dip in the Yamuna at the time of festivals, but looking at its present state, no one dares to do it anymore," says Sharma.
Despite a Supreme Court ruling ordering the cleanup of a river that supplies 70 per cent of New Delhi's water, the Yamuna remains filthy.
According to the Central Pollution Control Board, around 70 per cent of the pollution in the Yamuna is human excrement.
The Yamuna Action Plan, launched in 1993, has met with little success despite billions being spent on it.
Agarwal is more hopeful. He thinks a bigger challenge will be conserving the river land.
"The river will certainly be clean in the next few years. I think, we will have a cleaner river.
