Performance ' Lola' by Ute Lemper\u003cbr/\u003eStage star Ute Lemper leads a special tribute show to the movie legend Marlene Dietrich in Berlin tonight (December 31).\u003cbr/\u003e\"Marlene hundert\" (Marlene hundred), playing at the at the Friedrichstadt Palast, is a highlight of the centenary celebration of the movie icon's birth in the city.\u003cbr/\u003eStars including German chanteuse Ute Lemper will perform personal interpretations of Dietrich classics at the show hall.\u003cbr/\u003eLemper  told APTN she revelled in Dietrich legend: \" love it very much, I love her 'vague', her personality, how she acted, her madness, her interpretations, her Chutzpah, She was one of the women in show business  who influenced the 20th Century, after that Madonna took over.' \u003cbr/\u003eOther cultural events include the Berlin's Film Museum is staging a special exhibition on the diva, titled \"Forever Young\"  - an effort echoed by other Dietrich shows at the Schoeneberg district hall and the city's Gay Museum. \u003cbr/\u003eFor more than 40 years, Dietrich entranced film, theatre and night-club audiences with roles ranging from the cool temptress Lola in 'The Blue Angel' to the hot-tempered Wild West saloon queen, 'Frenchy', in 'Destry Rides Again.'\u003cbr/\u003e\"She was Germany's first international star,\" Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe star will also be remembered for her opposition to Hitler and support for the Allies during World War 2.\u003cbr/\u003eDietrich died in Paris in 1992 and was buried in Berlin next to the grave of her mother, Josefine. But, aside from a brief visit to bury her mother in 1945, Dietrich only returned to Germany for the turbulent 1960 concert tour.\u003cbr/\u003eHer reception then \"belongs to the dark chapters of postwar German history,\"  said Chancellor Schroeder\u003cbr/\u003eBut the controversy rumbled on after her death. Only after years of debate did city officials in 1997 approve a plan to name a square after her.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Marlene Dietrich Platz, in the new Potsdamer Platz complex, was named after the actress's native Schoeneberg neighborhood failed in a five-year struggle to agree on a suitable site.\u003cbr/\u003eSome Schoeneberg residents, still bitter over Dietrich's support for the Allies in World War II, had opposed any recognition for her in Berlin.
