Wide exterior of Asal Technologies  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Middle East peace process may have stalled, but some Israeli businesses are reaching out to Palestinians to work together.\u003cbr/\u003eHigh technology collaborations in the workplace might do more than politicians have managed to achieve so far.\u003cbr/\u003eHere, in a modest suburban office, Israeli high-tech workers have achieved something that still eludes their political leaders: a working partnership with Palestinians.\u003cbr/\u003eIsraeli-Palestinian peace talks may be stalled, but that hasn't stopped a small but steady trickle of Israeli technology companies from working with people on the other side of the decades-old conflict.\u003cbr/\u003eIsraeli bosses say it's one way of bringing a little bit of peace to their troubled corner of the world. \u003cbr/\u003eHigh-tech industry is among Israel's proudest economic achievements. \u003cbr/\u003eIsrael has the most start-ups per capita in the world and has helped produce innovations such as instant messaging and internet telephony. \u003cbr/\u003eMany Israeli technology firms send work offshore to eastern Europe, India or China.\u003cbr/\u003eBut in the past three years companies have begun to turn to Palestinian engineers and programmers.\u003cbr/\u003eIsraeli bosses say they are pleased to see just how similar to them their neighbours are.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The cultural differences are not as big maybe as we thought before,\" says Gai Anbar, chief executive of Comply, an Israeli start-up in this central Israeli town that develops software for global pharmaceutical companies like Merck and Teva.\u003cbr/\u003ePreviously he worked with engineers in India and eastern Europe, but found communication difficult. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 2007, when he was looking to outsource work at his new start-up company, he turned to Palestinian engineers. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says they speak like Israelis do, they are direct and uninhibited. Today his company directly employs four Palestinians.\u003cbr/\u003eAsal Technologies is a Palestinian outsourcing company that works with Comply and a handful of other Israeli-based companies.\u003cbr/\u003eSamer al-Jitan, the professional services director says their close proximity makes Palestinians ideal colleagues. \u003cbr/\u003e\"In normal situations you could get there within an hour, to be in their offices and vice versa,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eComply's office in Hod Hasharon is only about 20 miles (32 kilometres) from Asal Technologies in the West Bank city of Ramallah - but they are still worlds apart.\u003cbr/\u003eTravel restrictions make meetings between Israelis and Palestinians rare, and psychological barriers separate them as well.\u003cbr/\u003eIsrael's military prevents most Palestinians and Israelis from crossing the border without special permits, citing security concerns.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Anbar says his company is proving sceptics wrong.  \u003cbr/\u003eIsraeli project manager Gali Kahane chats online in English with Palestinian programmer Mohammad Radad, sending him smiley emoticons while reviewing updates to the database software they are developing.\u003cbr/\u003eWorking with Palestinians at first it was \"a little bit strange\" she says, but now it's like working with any other Israeli developer.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are very curious what they think about us,\" says Kahane, but she adds, they never talk politics. \"The only thing we talk about is when the bugs will be finished, and reaching our deadline together.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAnbar says working with Palestinians is \"doing something good for the world we are living in,\" but says the real reason he outsources to the West Bank is financial. \u003cbr/\u003ePalestinian workers are cheaper than their Israeli counterparts, are ambitious, and work in the same time zone.\u003cbr/\u003eHe pays the outsourcing company about 4,000 US dollars a month per engineer, half the cost of similar services from an Israeli company.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 10 Israeli start-ups and international companies with centres in Israel have been outsourcing to the West Bank in the past three years, says international aid group Mercy Corps, which is working to encourage these ventures. \u003cbr/\u003eThe group says said visits by Israeli businessmen to Ramallah - with Israeli military permission - are becoming more common.\u003cbr/\u003eNetworking giant Cisco says it was the first international corporation with research and development centres in Israel to begin outsourcing work to the West Bank. \u003cbr/\u003eIsraeli branches of Hewlett-Packard Co., Intel Corp. and Microsoft Corp. have followed Cisco's example and have begun to outsource to the Palestinian territories this year, according to Mercy Corps.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Samer al-Jitan, these collaborations can help forge that elusive peaceful settlement.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's going to show the world that there is a chance to work together and be able to work together,\" says al-Jitan.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's a small step, but maybe hi-tech can
