We don't know what will be the end result. (Question: Why is it so emotional and important?) Because it is a situation which is in our judgement very important and having people, because they have been involved in politics, to be facing the death penalty is pretty serious.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Jean Chretien, Prime Minister of Canada\u003cbr/\u003eBut Nigeria's foreign minister, who is attending the summit, claims the international media have distorted the facts about Mr Saro-Wiwa and the death sentence.\u003cbr/\u003eHe also accused some of his Commonwealth partners of hypocrisy.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003eMr Saro-Wiwa will not be held because he is asking for better amenities for Ogoni people. Mr Saro-Wiwa will not be touched because he is worried about the environment. Unfortunately, Mr Saro-Wiwa, who was not even the original leader of the movement of the survival of the Ogoni people but became the leader because he became more militant, did not want to use civilised means or normal negotiation in order to achieve his ends. He was responsible, along with others, for the gruesome murder of four of the members of that movement who were the original leaders. They include a former minister and a former secretary to the government of River State. We understand that recently since the trials, that took nine months through a court which had been established according to the laws of our country, that there has been overwhelming distortion of the facts in the international media. \u003cbr/\u003ePeople are misconceiving what has happened as a trial for murder to be a trial for civil rights or for politics etc. These are not the truth. We are talking about someone involved in the murder - gruesome murder - of four Nigerians from his own area and prominent citizens for that matter. And therefore, the situation is... we should not misjudge what has happened and imagine that Saro-Wiwa is being persecuted because he is worried about the environment. Let me talk about capital punishment. There is capital punishment in other countries in the world. For instance, I understand that some members of the Commonwealth, in their country they do execute people for the mere possession of drugs. We understand that in some countries, if you are caught for petty theft, they chop off your limbs. We don't support these things. That is why we think that as a body we should look into all these things worldwide then being particular about Nigeria. We are not coming here for an inquisition because if we were to discuss the problems of nations the 52 members that constitute the Commonwealth all have individual problems in their countries, including your country, New Zealand, including Australia, Great Britain. We have the problem of Ireland and Scotland. We have  problems everywhere. All we are saying is that there should be understanding and discussion, not persecution of a country because it does not have the advantage of powerful media that some other countries
