Various of confiscated drugs (NB not related to the Zevallos case)\u003cbr/\u003eA Peruvian airline mogul on Wednesday challenged the United States to open a trial against him in US courts, a day after the US authorities placed him on an list of overseas drug kingpins.\u003cbr/\u003eAero Continente founder Fernando Zevallos said at a news conference that he was sending a letter \"to the president of the United States\" asking that they open a trial in the United States so that \"I can face my accuser... and the justice of the US decide whether I am innocent or guilty.\"\u003cbr/\u003eZevallos, 46, has been the subject of more than 30 US Drug Enforcement Administration investigations, but has never been convicted of a crime and denies any wrongdoing. \u003cbr/\u003eHe lived as a legal permanent US resident in Florida for a decade before returning to Peru in 2001 to face drug trafficking charges, on which he was acquitted.\u003cbr/\u003eUS law enforcement documents obtained by The Associated Press earlier this year allege that Zevallos has used bribes, threats and intimidation to scare off witnesses and manipulate Peru's justice system during his rise to the highest levels of Peru's business community.\u003cbr/\u003eA Lima court on Tuesday opened a retrial on cocaine trafficking charges, to which Zevallos pleaded not guilty.  \u003cbr/\u003eAs part of the kingpin programme, the US Treasury Department also on Tuesday froze American assets belonging to Zevallos and five other people and seven companies linked to him, including Aero Continente.\u003cbr/\u003eZevallos said he has a house in Florida and other assets worth a total of one (m) million US dollars that have been locked down.\u003cbr/\u003eThe airline mogul entered the industry with a small-plane air taxi service in Peru's Amazon jungle in 1980. He founded Aero Continente in 1992, transferring ownership to relatives three years later. The fleet now includes some two dozen planes and accounts for 67 percent of the Peruvian market.   \u003cbr/\u003eUnder the 1999 Drug Kingpin Act, people placed on the US list of drug traffickers and their related businesses are denied access to the US\u003cbr/\u003efinancial system and any transactions involving US companies and individuals.\u003cbr/\u003eThat could be crippling for the Peruvian airline since it means that US companies that sell Boeing airplane parts are now banned from providing them to Aero Continente to maintain its fleet of
