(Jan. 13)\u003cbr/\u003eRon Barber, Gabrielle Giffords' chief of staff, was feeling well enough to venture out of the hospital THURSDAY and see the growing carpet of flowers, homemade cards and candles for himself.\u003cbr/\u003eHe was warmly greeted with applause and long hugs. But the person who was most anxious to see him was Anna Ballis, who didn't even know him before Saturday.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I'm definitely part of the Barber family now and will always be,\" she said.\u003cbr/\u003eBallis went to her neighborhood grocery store to pick up some things for dinner that morning and found herself in the middle of a violent shootout.\u003cbr/\u003eShe was able to take cover but Barber was shot in the cheek and the leg, where a bullet pierced an artery. Ballis helped stop his bleeding by putting pressure on the wound near his groin, which doctors say may have helped him heal faster.\u003cbr/\u003eBarber and Ballis held hands and hugged.\u003cbr/\u003e\"He wanted to come and see the memorial. Wanted to see what Tucson's all about,\" Ballis said.\u003cbr/\u003eBarber's wife and children pointed out cards for his colleague, outreach director Gabe Zimmerman who Barber had mentored. Friends say Barber's injuries haven't slowed him down.\u003cbr/\u003e\"He was in his hospital bed in the ICU and still had on his Blackberry and asking about everybody else, wanting to know what was going on and find out what he could do and running the office from his bed,\" said Tucson's state representative, Steve Farley.\u003cbr/\u003eNow the community that he worked for as a congressional staffer is rooting for his speedy recovery.  Barber humbly thanked his well-wishers.\u003cbr/\u003eBallis didnยนt want to talk about what happened on Saturday. But she said she was glad to meet Barber and his family under better circumstances. She hopes itยนll help heal her psychological wounds from what she witnessed that tragic day.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I feel like I'm his angel.
