As you are aware it was with very profound grief that we announced that our patient who had been airlifted here earlier in the week had passed away at 0445 a.m. this morning. Her family and all of us from the High Commission were by her side. The Mount Elizabeth hospital has issued a press release, earlier this morning, which gives details of the various trauma she had suffered and the various medical treatment which was made available to her. The requisite formalities for sending the body to India are being completed. The deceased and the family members will be flown back to India in a chartered aircraft later this afternoon. The High Commission is working out the detailed logistics. We extend our deepest condolences to the family members and pray to the Almighty to give them strength to bear this loss, the grief and their pain. As you maybe aware, the Prime Minister of India has given a moving and solemn message, while conveying his and the nation's deepest condolences to the family. I have shown this message to the family members and they fully share the sentiments it expresses. We have received numerous messages from Singapore and from elsewhere of support and condolences. All these messages have been conveyed to the family members, who are deeply appreciative of the concerns that these messages express. Tilt up of Indian High Commission building\u003cbr/\u003eThe body of an Indian woman, who died after being gang-raped and beaten on a bus, will be flown from Singapore to India on Saturday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe victim, who had been transferred from New Delhi to Singapore for treatment, passed away early Saturday morning. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The requisite formalities for sending the body to India are being completed. The deceased and the family members will be flown back to India in a chartered aircraft later this afternoon. The High Commission is working out the detailed logistics,\" T.C.A. Raghavan, Indian High Commissioner to Singapore, told reporters.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We extend our deepest condolences to the family members,\" he continued.\u003cbr/\u003eRaghavan added that the woman had died with her family and High Commission officials at her side.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter 10 days at a hospital in New Delhi, the Indian capital, the victim was brought on Thursday to Mount Elizabeth hospital, which specialises in multi-organ transplants.\u003cbr/\u003eThe woman and a male friend, who have not been identified, were travelling in a public bus in New Delhi, after watching a film on the evening of 16 December when they were attacked by six men.\u003cbr/\u003eThe woman was raped and an iron rod was inserted into her body, resulting in severe organ damage. \u003cbr/\u003eBoth of them were then stripped and thrown off the bus, according to police.\u003cbr/\u003eIndian police have arrested six people in connection with the attack, which left the victim with internal injuries, a lung infection and brain damage. \u003cbr/\u003eShe also suffered a heart attack while in hospital in India.\u003cbr/\u003eThe frightening nature of the crime shocked Indians, who have come out in their thousands for almost daily demonstrations, demanding stronger protection for women and death penalty for rape, which is now punishable by a maximum life imprisonment.\u003cbr/\u003eIndian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said he was aware of the emotions the attack has stirred and that it was up to all Indians to ensure that the young woman's death will not have been in vain.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The Prime Minister of India has given a moving and solemn message, while conveying his and the nation's deepest condolences to the family.
