Wide shot of interview\u003cbr/\u003eThe World Health Organisation is urging China to expand an intensive monitoring program for health workers and areas hit hard this year by SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) to ensure that any new outbreak is caught early, a WHO official said Friday.\u003cbr/\u003eChina has created a \"very good system\" nationwide to detect infectious diseases since the outbreak of  SARS, said Dr. Henk Bekedam, WHO's Beijing representative.\u003cbr/\u003eBut WHO wants to expand a program that monitors health workers and patients at a group of hospitals in Beijing and the provinces of Guangdong and Shanxi, he said. Those areas accounted for most of the 349 deaths reported on China's mainland.\u003cbr/\u003eAn expanded system also would monitor people who work in Chinese laboratories that handle the virus, Bekedam said. \u003cbr/\u003eThe only reported SARS case since the disease ebbed in June was a 27-year-old lab employee in Singapore who later recovered.\u003cbr/\u003eThe world's first known SARS case was recorded in Guangdong in southern China last November. More than 5,000 people became sick with the illness on the country's mainland - 20 percent of them health workers who were infected on the job.\u003cbr/\u003eChinese health experts have said they expect SARS to re-emerge during flu season this autumn, though they say they can't predict how large the outbreak might be.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, Bekedam cautioned against over reaction if the virus did return, citing a case in Singapore recently. \u003cbr/\u003eChina has resumed daily reporting of SARS cases, though it says none have been detected in recent weeks. \u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities have resumed screening travelers for fever in some areas and reopened special SARS wards in Beijing hospitals.\u003cbr/\u003eThe central government has sent teams to provinces to check local preparations, said Bekedam. He said WHO is asking for permission to send its own experts to look at \"high-risk\" provinces.\u003cbr/\u003eIn contrast to complaints that China failed to respond to requests for information and cooperation during the SARS outbreak, Bekedam said WHO expected to work closely with Chinese authorities in any possible return of the
