a disk of dust and gas from which planets could have formed.\u003cbr/\u003eNewer, more powerful infra-red detectors have revealed that the dust around H-R 4796 exists mostly in a thin outer ring, leaving an empty cavity between it and the star.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe graphic image showed a doughnut-shaped disk of dust around the star, which scientists said then expanded to create the empty cavity. \u003cbr/\u003eScientists now believe this cavity was most likely carved out by planets that swept up the dust as they began to form. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile they said they have no evidence yet of actual new planets, the team members said the studies suggest the planets' formation as the best explanation for the absence of dust.\u003cbr/\u003eThe astronomers said their findings suggest that the formation of planets similar to Earth is common and that many other planets capable of sustaining life could exist.\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Michael Werner of NASA introduced his audience to the star at the heart of the scientists' new theories, with the assistance of some computer imagery.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE:  (English) (mostly voiceover over graphic)\u003cbr/\u003e\"I'd like to introduce you to H-R 4796.
