Wide pan exterior of Myanmar International Convention Centre\u003cbr/\u003eThe Asian edition of the World Economic Forum kicked off in Myanmar's newly built capital on Thursday with global business and political leaders scrutinising the pace of change almost three years after a military junta started on the path of reform.\u003cbr/\u003eThe gathering brings together more than 1,000 participants from 55 countries, according to organisers, making it the biggest gathering of its kind to take place in decades in the once isolated country.\u003cbr/\u003ePresident Thein Sein is scheduled to open the meeting officially on Thursday, sharing the stage with the prime ministers of Laos and Vietnam to discuss opportunities for development in Asia. \u003cbr/\u003eOpposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, chairman of the National League for Democracy party and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, will also speak at the forum, along with the heads of companies such as PepsiCo., Unilever and Mitsubishi Corporation.\u003cbr/\u003eOrganisers boast that it is the first international conference of its size and importance to be held in Myanmar, saying more than 900 participants from 50 different countries are attending.\u003cbr/\u003eMyanmar's government hopes to present a new and improved image of the country during the forum, with the aim of luring investors to help lift the economy.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is a very complex reform programme. It's not just the economic opening up, it's a political opening up. It's the change of the way government operates,\" said United Nations Development Programme Administrator, Helen Clark.\u003cbr/\u003eClark, who also co-chairs the forum, added that such transitions are complex and \"there will be bumps\" along the way.\u003cbr/\u003e\"But I think Myanmar is on the path from which it's not going back, the economy will be opening up, there will be more investment, things will change here,\" she added.\u003cbr/\u003eMyanmar is emerging from almost five decades of military rule into the challenges of transitional democracy and the potentially lucrative status of a frontier economy.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The world can't expect it to be everything great in day one. It will be an evolution, but it will be a revolution because I think it will be quick,\" regional leading budget airline AirAsia boss Tony Fernandes said. \u003cbr/\u003eGlobal consulting group McKinsey and Company predicted in a report last month that Myanmar could \"potentially quadruple the size of its economy from 45 (b) billion US dollars in 2010 to more than 200 (b) billion in 2030, creating 10 (m) million non-agricultural jobs and potentially lifting 18 (m) million out of poverty in the process.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe question posed in different sessions on Thursday in the forum was how to make that growth inclusive in a country were 26 percent of the population live in poverty and 37 percent remain unemployed.\u003cbr/\u003eThe global elite's gathering in Naypyitaw, an administrative and power centre lacking most of the basic services in other capitals, comes at a critical time for the country's reforms. \u003cbr/\u003ePoverty is only the tip of the iceberg of the challenges faced, as the close to 60 (m) million people of Myanmar, also known by its former name of Burma, cope with relatively more freedom that in the past decades of authoritarian military rule.\u003cbr/\u003eCorruption, bureaucracy, the lack of rule of law and a potential backlash from those still nostalgic about the old regime are among the hurdles on the road ahead.\u003cbr/\u003eHuman rights concerns are another potentially destabilising holdover from the old military regime. \u003cbr/\u003eThe government has so far failed to reach a comprehensive peace with ethnic minorities, who have sought more autonomy for decades, and has been fighting against the Kachin minority in the north for the past two years.\u003cbr/\u003eIt has also seen the rise of sectarian violence directed at the country's Muslim Rohingya minority in western Arakan State, with hundreds of people killed and about 140,000 made homeless in civil strife last year.
