Wide of Grand Canal\u003cbr/\u003eThe historic city of Venice is being damaged by modern living and struggling to deal with the problems caused by huge visitor numbers. \u003cbr/\u003eThe city, laced together by some 450 bridges, is a major tourist attraction, with about 20 (m) million visitors a year.\u003cbr/\u003eThe visitors, while vital for the local economy, have led to an increase in traffic on the waterways and consequently damage to the city's infrastructure.\u003cbr/\u003e''It's changed the conditions of the foundations, but it is also something very difficult to limit because Venice now is a modern city it needs to have motorboats and it needs to have vaporetti for public transportation and private water taxis,'' said Melissa Conn, the Venice director of Save Venice, an American organisation that works towards protecting the city's art and architecture. \u003cbr/\u003eConn said that a constant maintenance programme is needed to stay ahead of the problem by dredging the canals and reinforcing the foundations of the buildings that are constantly being worn down by water, waves and pollution.\u003cbr/\u003eThe canals need to be dredged regularly to keep the rubbish and silt from settling on the bottom.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are roughly 60,000 residents in Venice, who together with thousands of tourists, pack water buses known as vaporetti, as well as gondolas and water taxis.\u003cbr/\u003ePlacido Bozzano has been rowing people through the city's famous canals in his gondola for the past 26 years.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"Traffic increases with progress, the number of people coming here increase, the number of motorboats have increased. There is nothing you can do about it,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever he said that the increased traffic does pose risks.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Out there in the canals it is dangerous, in the lagoon near St.Mark's Square there are waves made by vaporetti and various motorboats that are dangerous, that could be dangerous for passengers and gondoliers.''\u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Marcello Panetton, director of the Venice transport authority is constantly looking for new ways to ease the size of the waves and the volume of traffic on the canals.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They generate a lot of waves and sometimes they don't respect the speed limits and this increases the problem,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eTo cope with the increased traffic, mirrors have been installed along the walls and in the Grand Canal the city has posted electronic speed detectors.\u003cbr/\u003eIn January they launched a special line running along the Grand Canal from the train station and car park to St. Mark's Square for regular users.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile adding the extra line has helped ease the congestion, the problem of traffic and the impact of the waves on buildings along the Grand Canal is likely to continue to
