Carlos, showing his torso\u003cbr/\u003eIn Villa Quinteros, 1-thousand-300 kilometres (800 miles) northeast of the Argentinian capital Buenos Aires, hunger and malnutrition threatens the lives of thousands of babies and their parents in a country that produces enough food to feed a whole continent.\u003cbr/\u003eOf 45 newborn babies, 10 need to be put in intensive care because of malnutrition.\u003cbr/\u003eSome babies barely weigh a kilogramme.\u003cbr/\u003eBut lack of food and essential vitamins don't affect just babies. Most of the mothers arriving at Tucuman Maternity Hospital are in the same or worst state than the babies they are about to give birth to.\u003cbr/\u003eThe hospital has the largest number of births per day in Latin America, and due to poor funding it can hardly cope with the enormous number of patients.\u003cbr/\u003eVilla Quinteros isn't exceptional. Even though Tucuman is not the poorest province in Argentina, the increase in the number of malnourished children is the largest in the country.\u003cbr/\u003eMost people eat once a day, with a menu of mate cocido, a local tea, and a basic stew.
