The Co-chairman of the pro-Kurdish...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eA pro-Kurdish party in Turkey expressed its support for a future Syria made up of autonomous regions on Sunday, a week before scheduled talks between the Syrian government and the opposition in Geneva. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Co-chairman of the pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (BDP), Selahattin Demirtas, said a Syria made up of autonomous regions is \"the right model\" for the country, and a Kurdish region might be one of these regions. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Syria could be an administrative structure composed of autonomous regions, cantons,\" said Demirtas speaking at a news conference in Istanbul. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Rojova Kurdistan region could be one of these regions, he added.\"   \u003cbr/\u003eWith less than two weeks to go before the January 22 conference, the main Western-backed opposition group, the Syrian National Coalition (SNC), has still not decided if it will attend. \u003cbr/\u003eDemirtas also said Syrian Kurds will join the SNC at the talks, only if their rights were guaranteed.\u003cbr/\u003e\"As far as I know, that is what their (Syria's Kurds) position is: if the Syrian opposition accepts the Kurds' demands and promises that Kurds' rights will be guaranteed in Geneva II, they will go to Geneva II together with the Syrian opposition,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eOtherwise, they will attend as a separate group and join the opposition once they have secured their own interests. \u003cbr/\u003e\"If the Syrian opposition does not guarantee this, Syria's Kurds will attend Geneva II with a separate Kurdish delegation. And after guaranteeing their own rights in Geneva II, they will aim to unify with the opposition, and leave the meeting as one opposition group,\" he said. \u003cbr/\u003eKurds are the largest ethnic minority in Syria, making up more than 10 percent of the country's 23 (m) million people. \u003cbr/\u003eThey are centered in the impoverished northeastern province of Hassakeh, wedged between the borders of Turkey and Iraq. \u003cbr/\u003eThe capital Damascus and Syria's largest city, Aleppo, also have several predominantly Kurdish neighbourhoods.\u003cbr/\u003eSyria's Kurds have dramatically strengthened their hold on the far northeast reaches of Syria, and have declared their autonomous regional administration in November 2013. \u003cbr/\u003eTurkish authorities have rejected the self-rule by Kurds in the war-torn neighbouring country. \u003cbr/\u003eThe self-rule of Syria's Kurds have resulted in Turkey's unwillingness to support them, despite publicly supporting other opposition groups in Syria.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Whilst aid and daily business is allowed through the border line and border gates that is in the hands of radical groups, embargo is being placed in the regions in the hands of Kurds, and border gates are kept closed,\" Demirtas said.\u003cbr/\u003eHe also claimed that the aid coming from the US and Europe to Syria ends up in the hands of radical groups because of Ankara's policy of keeping the border gates closed near Kurdish towns in Syria.\u003cbr/\u003e1.
