a technology developed by the Army - for its final descent to landing.\u003cbr/\u003eNASA engineers say 80 per cent of the technology involved in the X-38 has already been developed.\u003cbr/\u003eCommercial equipment such as the flight computer and software operating system are used in aircraft's, but these technologies have not been applied to a space people-carrier before now.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough the current design will be used strictly as a crew return vehicle, scientists say there are possibilities for other far reaching applications.\u003cbr/\u003eThe project could also lead to a possible joint U-S and European craft that would be launched on a French Ariane 5 booster rocket.\u003cbr/\u003eA test vehicle is planned for launch aboard the Space Shuttle for an unpiloted space flight in the year 2000.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce operational early next century, the X-38 could become the first people-carrier to travel to and from Earth's orbit in more than 20 years.\u003cbr/\u003eJohnson Space Centre, Houston, U-S -
