What we do know is that he had been previously captured by coalition forces some time in 2003 and released some time in 2004.  he had been in Syria for a while. Photo of Muharib Abdul-Latif al-Jubouri, shown at news conference\u003cbr/\u003eUS-led forces in Iraq conducting a crackdown on al-Qaida killed a senior member of the insurgent group who was responsible for the high-profile kidnappings of several Westerners, a US military spokesman told journalists on Thursday whilst the Iraqi Interior ministry further clouded days of confusion by stating that two different operatives, one of whom the US said it had killed, were in fact the same man.\u003cbr/\u003eUS Major General William Caldwell said the killing of Muharib Abdul-Latif al-Jubouri, described as al-Qaida's information minister, had apparently led to confused reports that two other men had been killed - Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, the head of an umbrella group of insurgents which includes al-Qaida, and Abu Ayyub al-Masri, the head of al-Qaida in Iraq.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeculation had been rife earlier in the week that al-Masri had been killed  by rivals north of Baghdad, but no confirmation followed. \u003cbr/\u003eCaldwell said the reports of his death could not be confirmed.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Caldwell said the US does not have the bodies of Abu Omar al-Baghdadi or Abu Ayyub al-Masri and doesn't know of anybody that did.\u003cbr/\u003eCaldwell said the military had conducted numerous operations against al-Qaida in Iraq over the last six days.\u003cbr/\u003eAl-Jubouri was killed while trying to resist detention in an operation about six kilometres (four miles) west of the Taji air base, north of Baghdad, early on Tuesday morning, he said.\u003cbr/\u003eCaldwell said the body was initially identified by photos, then confirmed by DNA testing on Wednesday.\u003cbr/\u003eAl-Jubouri was alleged to have been deeply involved in the kidnapping of American reporter Jill Carroll, who was released, and Tom Fox, one of four men from the Chicago-based peace group Christian Peacemaker Teams who was found fatally shot in Baghdad on March 10, 2006.\u003cbr/\u003eHe was also involved in the kidnapping of two Germans in January 2006, Caldwell said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Iraqi Interior Ministry also said earlier on Thursday that al-Jubouri had been killed, but claimed that Muharib Abdul-Latif al-Jubouri and Abu Omar al-Baghdadi were in fact the same person, information the US military was either not aware of or does not accept.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Interior Ministry showed photos of what it said was his body.\u003cbr/\u003eThe image showed a bloated corpse that would be hard to identify purely from a photograph.\u003cbr/\u003eInterior ministry spokesman Brigadier General Abdul-Karim Khalaf said \"The body was then positively identified by people who know al-Jubouri very well, and we are now certain that this is the body of  the criminal Muharib Abdul-Latif al-Jubouri.
