Close-up of burn patients hands doing exercise\u003cbr/\u003eIn a small room on the fourth floor of Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, some of the United States' most severely injured soldiers come together for physical therapy.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir burns are horrific, their stories heroic, and at once heartbreaking.\u003cbr/\u003e\"A lot of times we'll have an injury so severe everyone's thinking the same thing 'maybe we should let this guy go, put him out of his misery and suffering,'\" said Dr. Kevin Chung.\u003cbr/\u003e\"But we don't do that, especially with the young guysďż˝ because we've seen miracles.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMiracles like Sergeant Shilo Harris. He was injured in an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) blast on 19 February this year in Baghdad and was one of only two survivors, in his five-member unit.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I have four children. I want to be healthy so I can go play with them, we can go to the waterpark, go hiking, camping, fishing, hunting,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eFive months after he was injured in Iraq, Sergeant Harris is a success story.\u003cbr/\u003eNot only because of how far he's come, but simply because he's alive.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Many of these patients with multiple organ system injuries would not have survived before,\" said Dr. Evan Renz.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Desert Storm it took nearly 12 days for a burn victim to get back to the United States to receive specialised care.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Vietnam it was closer to 17 days.\u003cbr/\u003eNow these soldiers can be in a San Antonio operating room within 72 hours of being injured - and it's making a difference not only to the soldiers but also their families.\u003cbr/\u003eKathreyn Harris, wife of Sergeant Harris, knows how lucky she is to have her husband.\u003cbr/\u003e\"To see the things he's survived in his lifetime, to be where he is now.
