Various shots of students
Flashy new mobile (cell) phones, faster networks and more entertainment geared for the small screen took centre stage at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona. (Feb 11-14, 2008)
The four-day event was expected to draw more than 50,000 industry officials from major phone makers like Finland's Nokia Corp. and U.S. company Motorola Inc. as well as Samsung and LG, plus an appearance by actor Robert Redford who launched a short film showcase for mobile phones.
Despite trying to keep a low profile, Google Inc.'s presence was powerfully felt at the World Mobile Congress as several chip makers demonstrated
the capabilities of Google's highly anticipated Android open-source operating system for mobile devices.
The prototypes being demonstrated at the world's largest mobile conference by Texas Instruments Inc. and Qualcomm Corp. looked nothing like the sure-to-be sleek cell phones that will debut the open source operating system, though no one wanted to say when that will be.
But both U.S-based chipmakers agreed that the capabilities should push the marriage of the Internet with mobile devices to new levels as Google stakes out its place in the wireless world.
Qualcomm's prototype was in the form of a series of circuit boards built around a display; the demos offered no clues on eventual cell phone style or interface, both of which will be in the hands of future OEM handset manufacturers.
Android is based on Linux open-source code, unlike competing proprietary operating systems from Microsoft Corp. and others, which is likely to spark a proliferation of applications from the development community.
Open source means the basic computer code is freely available so anyone can develop new applications.
Qualcomm's product manager Sy Coudhury says that this will help transform the mobile phone into a one gadget that can perform multiple tasks for the user.
Right next to Android, Qualcomm was running demos of Microsoft's Windows Mobile, demonstrating Qualcomm's commitment to continue its work with other operating systems.
At Texas Instruments stands, company officials demonstrated the ease with which a user will be able to navigate web pages from mobile phone running Android, full size web pages, not those resized for mobiles, by running a finger over the display.
The TI prototype shown is embedded in a multimedia mobile phone called OMAP850.
The real beauty of Android, TI say is that it contains all the essential building blocks you need for a mobile phone.
As such, TI was able to put Android on top of its processor inside of a week and they estimate they could cut down the development of a smart phone, which combines web applications with traditional voice features, typically up to 18 months, to six or seven months.
Ramesh Iyer, Internet devise manager for Texas Instrument says "what we are using here in what we call the "OMAP Zone" is a variety of applications that have made possible using Texas Instrument OMAP applications processors and also Texas Instruments connectivity components like Bluetooth, wireless LANs and GPS. It's meant to be something that we partners with lots of OEMs and lots of carriers and it will be many many phones based on Android."
Google has lined up about 30 phone, chip and software companies to help develop Android systems.
Now the race is on to see which open-source software for mobile smart phones will gain primacy: Google's Android or LiMo.
The LiMo Foundation, a competing consortium that is developing a Linux-based open source operating platform, showed off 18
handsets from seven companies, some ready for market.
The promise of both Android and LiMo is that they will allow developers to quickly write applications for mobile phones without paying licensing fees as with proprietary software from companies such as Microsoft or Symbian, a development that could speed the drive to integrate the Internet into your mobile phone.
And they both are pooling industry players from handset manufacturers to mobile operators, software companies to chip makers.
The initiatives' objectives are widely overlapping, which is reflected in the number of companies that are members of both, including LG Electronics,
Motorola and Samsung as well as chipmaker Texas Instruments.
In all, Android has 32 members; OHA 34.
So far, there are no signs, however, that they will pool their efforts.
Elsewhere at the event on Wednesday, movie mogul Robert Redford signed a deal to bring movies to the smallest screens.....
Redford, an actor, director and Sundance Institute Founder and President, Robert was helping to launch a partnership between the GSM Association (GSMA) and Mofilm to present a short film showcase for mobile phones.
Short films featured at the Festival De Cannes Short Film Corner, Sundance Channel (i), the Shanghai International Film Festival, and the Festival del Film Locarno, as well as leading Bollywood content provider Hungama Mobile, will be showcased on mobile phones.
The special one-day mobile entertainment conference exploring the potential of the mobile phone as the so-called 4th screen, a medium for independent filmmakers to reach new audiences.
Young people and the way they interact with mobile phones were also high on the agenda on Wednesday.
There was a debate on the how to protect young people from abuse involving mobile phones.
Mike Short, vice president for Telefonica -O2 says that phone operators need to filter inappropriate behaviour like 'happy slapping'.
Cole Hasling, CEO of Global Sense, a UK based company who provide financial services on the internet says that some phone providers turn a blind eye to bullying and other forms of abuse as they are more concerned with revenue.
Students at Barcelona's University did not seem too interested in all the extra features promised by the mobile industry in the near future.
Laura Gimenez says she only uses her phone to call and send text messages.
But she is annoyed by unsolicited advertising messages sent to her phone.
Oriol Tor has had similar experiences, where he has gave out his number to a nightclub
