Jurgen Lin preforming the part of Alberich in Das Rheingold\u003cbr/\u003eIt's the 200th anniversary of the German composer, Wagner.\u003cbr/\u003eCriticised for being antisemitic, one of the greatest musicians of all time is being commemorated with an opera festival in Leipzig - the place of his birth.\u003cbr/\u003eGrandiose, dramatic, harmonic and controversial.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo hundred years after he was born, German composer Richard Wagner continues to inspire and stir debate.\u003cbr/\u003eFrom his musical style to his antisemitic views,  and the National Socialist government's use of his music, most people have a view of the man who was born in to a poor household on May 22 1813 in Leipzig.\u003cbr/\u003eThis week his birthplace holds a major Wagner festival with new Wagner operas performed every night.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Wagner's opera Rheingold, lust is pitted against greed as the dwarf Alberich rejects the Reihn maidens for the gold of their father.\u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Ulf Schirmer directs the opera.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says Wagner's popularity comes from his ability to manipulate the feelings of the audience.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Wagner has an unbelievable intensity in his works, and an incredible psychological credibility. Because the music in these mediums is very much based on Wagner,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eRichard Wagner was born on May 22 in the Jewish quarters of Leipzig in the German state of Saxony.\u003cbr/\u003eHis father, Carl Fredrich Wagner, was a police clerk, but died six months after Richard's birth.\u003cbr/\u003eThe family moved to Dresden where Wagner lived until his return to Leipzig at the age of 14.\u003cbr/\u003eHe showed little appetite for traditional schooling, preferring instead to focus on theatre and music.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter several failed attempts, unfinished works and failures, his first successful opera - Rienzi - premiered in Dresden in 1842.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Schirmer, Wagner's work marks the start of modern music.   \u003cbr/\u003e\"Modern music would not be possible without Wagner. And still today others base their work on him.\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eWagner's operas can be long and demanding.\u003cbr/\u003eDas Rheingold lasts for two and a half hours and the action moves on the arguments between gods and giants and the building of Valhalla.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Das Rheingold is only the first out of four parts which forms the \"Der Ring des Nibelungen\".\u003cbr/\u003ePlayed in its entirety, The Ring, as it is often know, lasts for 16 hours.\u003cbr/\u003eMany German towns try to claim Wagner as theirs.\u003cbr/\u003eWagner spent most of his youth in Dresden and returned later in life to work in the town.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd it was in Bayreuth in Bavaria where Wagner spent the final two decades of his life and achieved his lifelong ambition to build his own opera house.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it was in Leipzig that he was born and studied.\u003cbr/\u003eWagner went on to spend large parts of his life in exile due to his political ideas; after getting involved in an unsuccessful uprising in Dresden he had to flee to Paris and then Zurich.\u003cbr/\u003eHe also published antisemitic writings, something that still clouds his persona to this day.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it was Adolf Hitler's professed love for Wagner's music and the Nazis use of his compositions in their propaganda campaigns that has sullied his name the most.\u003cbr/\u003eWagner expert Thomas Krakow urges people to examine him in the context of 19th century Germany, and not through the prism of the Second World War and the holocaust.\u003cbr/\u003eKrakow points out that Wagner had been dead for a full six years before Hitler was even born:\u003cbr/\u003e\"The antisemitism� It distresses us what he wrote under a pseudonym in 1850 and again openly under his real name in 1869.
