Wide of skyline with smoke rising\u003cbr/\u003eLebanese troops pounded a Palestinian refugee camp with artillery and tank fire for a second day on Monday, raising huge palls of smoke as they battled a militant group suspected of ties to al-Qaida.\u003cbr/\u003eThe fighters holed up in the camp returned fire - lending credence to reports that they are far better armed than first thought.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was Lebanon's worst eruption of internal violence since the end of the 1975-90 civil war. \u003cbr/\u003eNearly 50 combatants were killed in the first day of fighting on Sunday, but it was not known how many civilians have been killed inside the Nahr el-Bared camp on the outskirts of the northern port city of Tripoli.\u003cbr/\u003ePalestinian officials in the camp reported at least nine civilians were killed in Monday's fighting, along with 40 wounded.  The figures could not be independently confirmed.\u003cbr/\u003eAP Television News filmed black smoke engulfing the skies over the camp as fires raged and heavy gunfire and explosions rang out constantly Monday afternoon.\u003cbr/\u003eThe fierce fighting resumed after a brief truce on Monday that allowed the evacuation of 18 wounded civilians, according to Saleh Badran, an official with the Palestinian Red Crescent Society.\u003cbr/\u003eThe battle was an unprecedented showdown between the Lebanese army and militant groups that have arisen in Lebanon's Palestinian refugee camps.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are home to tens of thousands of people living amid poverty and crime and which Lebanese troops are not allowed to enter.\u003cbr/\u003eThe troops were fighting a group called Fatah Islam, whose leader has said he is inspired by al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden and was training militants to carry out attacks in other countries. \u003cbr/\u003eLebanese officials have accused Syria of using Fatah Islam to stir up trouble in Lebanon, a charge Damascus has denied. \u003cbr/\u003eHundreds of Lebanese army troops, backed by tanks and armoured carriers, surrounded the refugee camp, where Fatah Islam fighters were holed up. \u003cbr/\u003eEarly on Monday, artillery bombardment and cannon fire from M-48 battle tanks sent up orange flames followed by white plumes of smoke from the camp, and the militants fired back with mortars.\u003cbr/\u003eTroops were targeting buildings known to house militants and striking any target that directed fire at them, an army officer at the front line said.\u003cbr/\u003eA spokesman for Fatah Islam, Abu Salim, warned that if the army siege did not stop, the militants would step up attacks by rockets and artillery \"and would take the battle outside Tripoli.\"\u003cbr/\u003eLebanon says it cannot enter the camps under understandings with the Palestinians that give the Palestinian Liberation Organisation authority there.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Lebanon also likely fears an assault into the camp would spark wider unrest and a backlash of sympathy for the Palestinian refugees across the Arab world - particularly at a time when Israel is striking Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.\u003cbr/\u003eThe clashes were triggered when police raided suspected Fatah Islam hideouts in several buildings in Tripoli, searching for men wanted in a recent bank robbery. \u003cbr/\u003eA gunbattle erupted, and troops were called in to help the police.\u003cbr/\u003eMilitants then burst out of the nearby refugee camp, seizing Lebanese army positions and ambushing troops. Lebanese troops later laid siege to the refugee camp, unleashing fire from tanks, artillery and heavy machine guns.\u003cbr/\u003eThe fighting with Palestinians adds a dangerous new layer of turmoil
