Various bowling alley\u003cbr/\u003eBowlers in Ethiopia are calling for the main bowling alley in the capital, Addis Ababa, to be renovated. \u003cbr/\u003eThe alley has been largely untouched by modern technology since its construction 40 years ago. \u003cbr/\u003eBut despite protests from users, staff at the bowling alley say they they do not want to see the building modernised. \u003cbr/\u003eFrom a distance, the Rece Bowling Alley in Addis Ababa looks no different to many others.\u003cbr/\u003eBut on closer inspection - there's something lacking that makes the complex rather distinctive.\u003cbr/\u003eTechnology.\u003cbr/\u003eUnlike modern bowling alleys in the 21st century, here there's no mechanical contraption to organise the skittles. \u003cbr/\u003eInstead, young men are recruited to do the work. Tesfaye Alemuhy is one of them. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says he has been working at the alley for 10 years. He adds that he has seen electronic systems on the movies but prefers the old fashioned method. He knows that the reason he has a job is because the bowling alley is so behind the times.\u003cbr/\u003e27 year old Kasahun Geabyah has also worked here for ten years. He, like the others, gets paid a meagre salary of just 5 US cents per game. On average he'll work 18 games per night, collecting nearly a dollar US, plus any tips. \u003cbr/\u003eThe job doesn't come with any perks. Despite 10 years of service Kasahun still has to pay around 30 US cents to play.\u003cbr/\u003eKasahun says that he works at the bowling alley part time after finishing his full-time job. He works here each day from 5pm to 10pm including weekends. \u003cbr/\u003eEthiopia was the first African country to represent the continent in the World Championships in Singapore in 1965 according to semi-professional bowler  Michele Orru. \u003cbr/\u003eHe's been a regular at this bowling alley since the Italians built it in 1965.  He's rated among the best three players in Ethiopia and has represented and been coach at numerous world championships.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Michele says his game is being hindered by the poor conditions of the alley. The last time it underwent any form of maintenance was by him - in 1978.\u003cbr/\u003eHe's travelled all around the world playing and says he's totally fed up with how backward and basic Addis Ababa's bowling alley is.\u003cbr/\u003eBut firm plans for refurbishment are unlikely to come about any time soon.  Board members of Rece Bowling Alley say thay have been asking government and local business for financial assistance for years to upgrade the equipment, but with no luck. \u003cbr/\u003eBoard mermber, Teshome Mosisa says that the situation with the bowling alley is very tragic. He adds that he has travelled to bowling alleys around the world and the Rece is the most backward centre he has ever seen. \u003cbr/\u003eTo the outsider  this kind of bowling alley might be charming and even endearing.
